Larry Holmes was born on November 3, 1949, and raised in Easton, Pennsylvania, which eventually provided the boxing moniker “Easton Killer”. He was born as the fourth of 12 children to John and Flocy Holmes. His father left and went to Connecticut to work as a gardener to support the family, returning to visit them every three weeks. Larry left school in the seventh grade to work at a car wash and later drives a dump truck to help support his family. Larry Holmes was about 18 years old when he started boxing.

As an amateur, Holmes went 19-3. He has also worked as a sparring partner for Muhammad Ali, Joe Fraser, Jimmy Young, and Ernie Chivers. This helped him realize that he could keep on his own. His first lead as a serious contender was when he faced Ernie Chivers in March of 1978. Larry won by unbalanced twelve-round decision by unanimous vote. This victory set the course for the WBC Heavyweight Championship’s showdown against champion Ken Norton in Las Vegas on June 9, 1978. The fight lasted 14 rounds and scored in seven dead rounds each, but Holmes would have gathered in the 15th to win.
From 1978 through 1983, Larry Holmes was the WBC Heavyweight Champion, the Ring Heavyweight Champion from 1980 until 1985, as well as the IBF Heavyweight Champion from 1983 until 1985.
