River Oaks Chamber Orchestra uses technology to make classical music free, accessible!

Houston, Texas (KTRK) – A room full of orchestra musicians enters the River Oaks room, and at first it seems no different than any other group of talented musicians. But in the oboe department, Alecia Lawyer sees her musicians in a very different light.

“It’s all about the people,” said the attorney, who founded ROCO 18 years ago.

It all started after I walked into the Church of St. John the Divine as it was undergoing rebuilding and realized it would be perfect for a chamber orchestra.

After all, orchestral jobs are hard to come by.

“Joining an orchestra is 50 percent harder than joining a Major League Baseball team, and no one knows that,” the attorney said.

Fast forward two decades later, and ROCO is a thriving orchestra that attracts musicians from all over the continent.

“In the last 18 years, we’ve played in 60 different places in Houston, which is crazy. I think I went into every building and went to ‘ah,’” the attorney said as he sang on the field. Let’s do it here!”

The lawyer finds Rocco to be a fun, flexible orchestra. Musicians often perform in unique spaces in smaller groups, the musicians flying in whenever there is a show

“For me, Rocco has always been about these new tracks, and a lot of new music. I think the combination of that is really rare, so I love getting off,” said Scott St. John, a concert director who lives in Canada.

ROCO performs Free family party at Miller Outdoor Theater on Fridays at 8pm The Saturday Night Show will take place at Saint John the Divine.

And in something really unusual, they want the audience to bring their cell phones.

“The house lights are on,” the attorney said. “There’s a way to get into the public. We’re getting into the public, so I’m looking for people who like to do that, and if you’re not in Houston, that’s fine.”

This weekend’s concert series will also be broadcast live for those who cannot attend, with the goal of making Beethoven and Bach likable without being intimidated.
