Ryan Stegman discusses his magical hero story with Donnie Keats

The poison The team of Ryan Stegman and Donny Cates present a different kind of superhero story in fade away. Originally published digitally by the KLC Press Substack newsletter, fade away #1 from Cates, Stegman, JP Mayer, Sonia Oback, and John J. There has been a lot of interest in the series, especially when you look back on the success of Stegman and Cates poisonAnd the Absolute carnageAnd the The king in black. They have brought their loyal followers to their creators own efforts, with fade away The first we hope will be several projects.

“Sick and tired of all these ‘young’ stories about magic, wizards, fate and love and bla bla bla? Well, good news! We are!” When did Keats say? fade away It was announced earlier this year. “So we got VANISH to answer one question we’ve all been asking; what if magic…. is metal? This is a project that Ryan and I have been secretly building and working on quietly in the background for years now, and we can’t wait to launch it on you. And the fun part for us is Well, pay close attention… Like revealing any great magic trick, you won’t see this one coming…”

fade away It’s the most exciting thing I’ve drawn. Creating a comic has always been my ultimate goal as a creator and we’ve done everything we can to make it special. And, well…we made it, I assure you.”

Create Vanish

ComicBook.com: What are some aspects of creating the universe from scratch like fade away Who goes unnoticed by fans?

Ryan Stegman: It’s probably as hard as they imagine, to be honest! Creating a world out of nothing is a challenge, but in a really good way. It took a while in the beginning of our work on this book, sure, but it was very rewarding.

I’ll also talk about the writing aspect (even though Donnie is the writer) because I was involved in creating the whole thing. The hardest part for me is not getting caught in the weeds. You tend to create all this crazy stuff and you start to connect and feel a sense of accomplishment. But then you go to work on it and realize that all of this stuff isn’t a story! So it’s good to know some of these things but when you start putting it into the context of the story your precious world that was in your head starts to unravel a bit and everything changes.

This is one of the reasons Donnie is so great at what he does. It has kept me grounded in these terms. It focuses on the story and the moments and allows everything to build around it. It’s a really amazing process and I’ll cherish it forever to be involved in it.

the Super heroes

I was pleased to see how the creative team incorporated a supernatural element into fade away. What was made in the decision to make superheroes the villains in disguise?

Simply, you asked for it! I love all the things I can draw fade away. But I am a super artist through and through. I have spent most of my 41 years on this planet fantasizing about superheroes. If I were to avoid all that for this creator-owned series, I wouldn’t feel right. I love superheroes, so they had to be here. Fortunately, when we created the story, it made perfect sense that they were there and it all came together beautifully.

Everkeep

We spend some time in Everkeep, which seems to be a fantasy land where young magic users are sent to hone their craft. Visually, it looks great because you have tech skyscrapers resting alongside flying dragons. Will we see more of Everkeep in Flashbacks, and what research went into its design?

I would say Everkeep required some crazy research on my part but…it all just came out of me. We had a couple of claims in place. We learned about the big sinister axis. We learned about clouds and dragons. But all that was left was for me to just have fun, and head into this place and go for it. Donnie never saw any introductions because I worked on this spread. We’ve just been talking about these things for so long that when I got to this page, I could see them in my mind.

Will we see more of Everkeep? yes. A book like this requires flashbacks to fully tell the story. And if the book is very successful, well… the spinoffs will happen.

Eleanor’s Big Plans

There seems to be a lot of untapped potential with Elynor. Her father was part of The Hollow and loyal to Vanish, but she doesn’t seem to see it that way. Could Elynor’s father be one of the Hollows who escaped Everkeep after Vanish’s death? And what can you tell us about her relationship with Mukhtar?

Oh boy. You are in the corrupted city! I can’t answer much of this, but I will say we have big plans for Elynor. We love that character. It’s the backbone of the story and it’s going to get a lot more sparkle in the future.

earnings?

How far do you have fade awayThe story is set, and what did you enjoy most from this creator-owned collaboration?

When Donnie and I sat in my office at the beginning of this trip, we identified 8 issues. That’s where we’re still because we didn’t want to put the cart before the horse anymore. But we know where this part of the story ends and we know exactly where it will go if people ask for it. We also have a sub-series drawn entirely by Kenny Porter (Mechanical DC) We’d like to move forward with it if the world can handle it. Can they, though? we will see.
