Anne Hathaway, Jeremy Strong’s Oscar Campaigns for ‘The Time of Armageddon’

In an effort to follow in the footsteps of last year’s Best Original Screenplay winner Kenneth Branna (“Belfast”), Focus Features is trying to position writer, director and co-producer James Gray as one of the awards season nominees for “Armageddon Time.” The film currently has an 89% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, and the awards team will be looking for opportunities outside of Writer’s Branch.

After the film premiered at the Cannes Film Festival, before stopping in Telluride and later this week at the New York Film Festival, the distributor revealed exclusively to diverse Categories of award presentations to film actors.

Anne Hathaway, who plays the devoted mother Esther, was one of the actors who seemed to straddle the line between lead and support, and would strive for the latter. Nominated for two Academy Awards for “Rachel Getting Married” (2008) and “Les Misérables” (2012), which she won for Best Supporting Actress, she hasn’t returned to the ceremony as a nominee in the past decade. With Michelle Williams in “The Fabelmans” moving to lead the actress, the studio is apparently seeing an opening for Hathaway in a wide-open category.

As brave grandmother Miki Rabinovich, four-time Tony nominee Toveh Feldschuh will also compete alongside Hathaway. Despite not getting a significant portion of screen time compared to her co-stars, Feldshuh’s role is full of one-line zingers and steals the movie every moment she appears on screen.

For the supporting actor, Emmy Award winner Jeremy Strong (HBO’s “Succession”) as Irving’s stern father, will attempt to break into a race filled with many veterans, including his co-star Anthony Hopkins as his wise and loving grandfather Aaron. Hopkins also has a cameo role in one scene in Florian Zeller’s “The Son” opposite Hugh Jackman which could also be a factor in the discussion.

In his first feature film, Jaylin Webb will be introduced as Paul Black’s friend Johnny Davis, who is going through many hardships, as a supporting player. His co-starring Banks Repetta, who plays young Paul, will be the only actor offered for major consideration.

The coming-of-age story, which focuses on the power of family and the pursuit of the American Dream, also seeks recognition in artistic races: production design (Happy Massee and Teri Bella), cinematography (Darius Khunji, who also filmed “Bardo”) and costume design. (Madeleine Weeks), film editing (Scott Morris), and original score (Christopher Spellman).

He also serves as producers alongside Academy Award winner Anthony Catagas (“12 Years a Slave”), Mark Bhutan and Rodrigo Teixeira.

Gray will receive the Mill Valley Director’s Honor and the Bill Wittliff Award for Screenwriting from the Austin Film Festival.

“Armageddon Time” will open in a limited edition on October 28th before expanding on November 11th.
