What is Harrenhal?

Harrenhal is the largest and most powerful castle of all the Seven Kingdoms of Westeros – but also the most cursed. It was built in the Riverlands by Harren “The Black” Hoare as a vain monument to himself – a forty-year project that shattered the backs of thousands of slaves from the surrounding river lands and iron islands.

However, on the day Harrenhal was completed, Aegon “The Conqueror” Targaryen first landed in Westeros; Aegon tried to reconcile with Harren Hoare, but the lord thought his magnificent castle impenetrable. The dragon of the Aegon Balerion The Black Dread melted the five great towers of Harrenhal to malice, killing Harren Hoare in the process. Subsequently, the Harinal was passed on to different families, but few of them lasted a long time there, and even fewer flourished there, and the legend of the frightening Harrenhal curse grew …

In the age of Targaryen Dragon HouseHarrenhal became the home of the House Strong family and was the site of King Jaeherys’ Great Council to select Viserys as his successor. Patriarch Lord Lionel Strong was an advisor to King Viserys I, and became the king’s second hand, replacing Otto Hightower after his removal from court. House Strong is the fourth house to occupy Harrenhal, and like those before them, the infamous castle brings them nothing but death.

Key spoilers: In House of the Dragon Episode 6, “The Queen and the Princess,” the mystery of Princess Rianera’s secret relationship with Ser Lyonel Strong’s son (and City Watch captain) Ser Harwin Strong begins to unravel with the birth of their third son. When the court begins to publicly whisper that the children of Rhinera are bastards and not true royal heirs, Ser Harwin is shamefully exiled to Harinal with his father. We learn that Ser Lyonel’s other son Larys “Clubfoot” is conspiring with some hired goons to set fire to Harrenhal, killing his father and brother. The mysterious fire in Harrenhal continued to reinforce the legend of the curse only in the time period of Game of Thrones, nearly 200 years later.

in Game of thronesHarrenhal and her curse are once again a central metaphor for the changing powers of Westeros, and the dark karma they can direct. It is held by King Robert at first, but is awarded as a reward several times throughout the series: to Janos Slynt (the City Watch captain who helps betray Ned Stark – eventually executed by Jon Snow); Tywin Lannister used it as his base during the War of the Five Kings after Robert’s death. Arya Strack must escape being a prisoner of Tywin Lannister there, and escape with Jaqen H’ghar; Jaime Lannister and Brienne of Tarth must also survive Harrenhal when possessed by Ross Bolton and his savage (Luke), Littlefinger obtains Harrenhal from King Joffrey, only to be executed before it can be inhabited.

At the end of the Game of thronesHarrenhal, still undefeated in her curse, was left uninhabited. In fact, the only person who seems to thrive there is “the mountain” Sir Gregor Clegane, who terrorized the Riverlands during the War of the Five Kings, killing, pillaging and usurping his way through the countryside, from his base at Harrenhal. If this is not evidence of his cursed nature…
