Dungeons & Dragons previews the next test run, with more changes to the seasons and the natural ’20s

Dungeons & Dragons has retracted its controversial changes to Natural 1s and Natural 20s as part of One’s latest D&D test. The latest test run, previewed today in a video released by Wizards of the Coast, features Natural 20s and Natural 1s no longer as automatic out-of-combat hits, as tested in the first single D&D test run released in August. In addition, the new run test also tests a rule where players are given inspiration when they throw 1, against 20. The new rules also introduce modified rules for Bard, Rogue, and Ranger. These new changes were summarized in a video posted by Wizards of the Coast earlier today.

The Bard, Rogue, and Ranger classes are grouped together as “Expert” classes, and are one of four distinct class groups. Some exploits and magic items will be specific to certain class groups, allowing the D&D design team to create new classes that can belong to specific class groups and thus automatically obtaining certain sets of rules and character building options. Classes in certain class groups can also share some design elements, such as all three expert classes with Experience character capabilities. Expert classes are specifically polymaths, allowing them to have items from other classes built into their abilities.

Class groups also provide a structure for group building, where the balanced party must include one character from each class group. Each spell class will also have suggested spells to help new players build their characters. The selection of rituals is also modified with this play test – any player who has a ritual spell in their list of spells can cast it as a ritual. Previously, only characters with a ritual spell ability could cast spells as a ritual.

One of the other distinctive changes is that the crowning ability for each class is now granted when the player reaches level 18 instead of level 20. Players are granted an epic blessing at level 20 instead.

No release date has been set for the latest single D&D test run, but it will likely be released in the very near future.
