The trailer for the documentary series “Barney” shows the dark side of the popular children’s series

The core message of the hugely popular children’s show “Barney and Friends” was to spread love and affection for one another, but the trailer for a new Peacock documentary series highlights the notion that America wasn’t too eager to accept that message.

In the trailer for the upcoming two-part docu-series “I Love You, You Hate Me,” several chief speakers, from science man Bill Nye to NBC’s Al Roker, share stories of how quickly the world has turned against the friendly dinosaur, rejecting his values. Inclusiveness and respect. Bob West, a Barney artist who dressed up as a happy purple dinosaur, shared that death threats were made against his entire family. “They were violent and outspoken, death and dismemberment of my family,” he says in the trailer. “They were going to come and find me, and they were going to kill me.”

Much of the dialogue in the trailer surrounds the show’s creator, Sheryl Leach, who developed the show in 1992 along with Kathy Parker and Dennis Deschzer after creating home videos of Barney’s character for her children. The dialogue series split from multiple interviews in the trailer emphasizes Barney’s character’s overall goal: “Barney is in favor of inclusion and acceptance. You should love everyone, we all have Cheryl Leach to thank for that.”

First announced in November of last year, the Peacock documentary series comes from Scout Productions, the producers of “Queer Eye.” The two-part documentary series is scheduled to air on October 12th on livestream.
