The Mona Lisa and the director of Blood Moon and Star talk about the unconventional reality of the film

As shown in movies like Girl walking home alone at night And the bad batchFilm director Anna Lily Amirpour’s ambitions know no bounds, blending unexpected different genres of storytelling and beats to create totally unique experiences. Amirpur continues this tradition with her new movie Mona Lisa and the blood moon, which features elements of science fiction and thriller, but also has warm family ties at its core. While audiences may not know much about the main character’s past or future, Amirpur recently recalled how useful it is for her as a storyteller to invest in those unseen elements. Mona Lisa and the blood moon Shows in theaters on demand and on Digital HD September 30th.

“I think the past — and definitely the past and the future because I thought of a sequel to this — and the back stories are all with the characters because then I understand why their house would look a certain way or the car they drive or all of those details,” Amirpour shared with ComicBook.com developing character elements this is. “I’m so obsessed about world building. I feel like everything – how this world looks, the locations, the sound, the shoes, everything, the way the food looks and everything, so there’s it. Then these lovely characters can just play. So, yeah ‘That’s a lot of it. I don’t have to think about the present and then in a weird way. It’s almost there somehow.'”

The film was described, “When a struggling single mother (Kate Hudson) befriends a fugitive from a mysterious mental institution with supernatural powers (Joon Jong Seo), she sees a lucrative opportunity to make some money quickly. But when she catches the attention of Detective (Craig Robinson), he begins Their luck is running out as the cops approach their criminal spree.”

While Amirpur is no stranger to an ambitious mix of genres, the experience did offer Hudson some new collaborative opportunities.

“Every experience is different, but Lily is wild and spontaneous, I would say, and very clear about what you need when you need it. She’s a shooter,” Hudson elaborated. “I see her as a shooting photographer, but I never really felt like she wasn’t completely focused on the performance, but I knew. I think actors sometimes can feel uncomfortable working with what people call ‘shooters.’ I see that shooters are the great visual masters, so I knew when she was directed to something specific, it was the time to get her back. I’m going to stick with this because she needs something that looks really cool. And I get excited about that because I just love cinema, and I know these things take time and they’re specific. So I love working in that environment .”

She continued, “Then the dancer in me really loves it because it’s like, ‘Tell me where to go and what to do, and I’ll be there for you. So it was great. That, to me, is what it’s like working with Lily. And when you’re working with … the writers and directors differ a lot. A more specific experience. For me, when you get into someone who is a writer and director, that’s their vision, and you have to respect that and hope it comes alive.”
