Houston crime: Man shot twice on porch of vacant Midtown home on Chenevert Street may be homeless, HPD says!

Houston, Texas (KTRK) – Houston police are working to determine if the downtown shooting was justified. Officers said the man who was shot may have been homeless.

The shooting took place on the front porch of a house on Chenevert Street near Tawam Street, near Baldwin Park, just before 10 p.m. Thursday.

The alleged shooter lives with his mother at 2800 block in Chenevert, although the shooting took place in an empty house next door.

The man’s mother told police she heard her son leave, then heard gunshots about 10 minutes later.

When the police arrived, they found the homeless man with gunshot wounds to the abdomen and leg. He was taken to the area hospital, where he is expected to be fine.

As for the charges – none have been filed at this point.

The Public Health Service (HPD) has referred the case to the Harris County District Attorney’s Office, which will determine whether charges will be filed.

Investigators said the alleged gunman never told us the story, so the exact reason for the shooting is unclear.

“The man said at this point he would not give us a statement unless he had a lawyer present. That’s his right,” said Lieutenant Ignacio Izagiri. “At this point, we don’t know exactly what happened between the male who was shot and the man who fired.”

Police said there were no known witnesses to the shooting, but were looking for surveillance video in the area.
