James Bond producers talk about finding the next 007

The James Bond series is entering a whole new era right now. The titular role of James Bond must be recast after the departure of Daniel Craig; Meanwhile, Amazon’s acquisition of MGM has put the Bond franchise in new hands for the first time in decades. With all that on the table, there are plenty of questions hanging about how the next phase of 007 films will shape.

In a new interview with EON production directors and Bond producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson, the topic of what’s coming next for the franchise is discussed — including the looming question of how to remake James Bond. According to Barbara Broccoli, the biggest problem is finding a new Bond that can actually sustain the franchise through four to six new films — perhaps within a decade (or more) of time:

“When you change the actor, you have to reimagine the direction the movie will go in. When you hire an actor, you hope to spend at least a decade with them and make four, five, six movies with them. So you have to think carefully, ‘What is the path?’ What will this actor achieve? How will you move the series in another direction?” empireadding that casting isn’t as easy as the endless online fancast selections make it sound like:

“It’s not just about going through Spotlight and saying, ‘Oh, there’s a 6’1-year-old guy,'” Broccoli continued. “We’re going to take our time. We want to understand where we want to go with the series and we want to do that before we bring in anyone else. We’ll probably start the process with [writers] rob [Wade] and neil [Purvis] We’ll see where we go! “

Those sentiments reflect the line that Broccoli, in particular, has been keeping since Craig’s latest movie, No Time to Die, came out last year. While fans want to see Tom Hardy, Idris Elba, Tom Hiddleston, or Henry Cavill become the next bond, it’s clear that the producers want a new, younger, Bond deal that can last a while — and that there are no decisions yet on who he is:

“Nobody’s into running,” Broccoli revealed in a previous interview. “We figure out where to go with him, we talk about it through. There’s no script and we can’t come up with one until we decide how we’re going to deal with the next movie because, really, it’s a reinvention of Bond. We’re reinventing his identity and that takes time. I’d say shooting We are at least two years away from him.”
