It’s increasingly likely that the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra will come with a 200MP main camera which could give it an edge over some of the best phones we’ve seen.
This is according to a Samsung fan site Galaxy Club (Opens in a new tab)Sources, who claim that the HD camera is pretty much unlocked for what will be Samsung’s next flagship phone. Annoyingly for spec fiends, the source was unable to confirm any other details, such as sensor size or aperture.
The Galaxy S22 Ultra actually offers a 108MP camera, which provides more detailed shots than any other phone on the market. The 200MP camera will take this feature even further, as well as likely deliver brighter but less accurate shots through “pixel binning,” as the 108MP camera does by default.
This isn’t the first time we’ve heard of Samsung cameras with such high resolution. Samsung has been working on 200MP cameras for a few years, but now we’re only seeing phones that actually use that sensor, like the Motorola Moto X30 Pro and Edge 30 Ultra. However, there are more and more reports making this claim about the Galaxy S23 Ultra, so it looks like Samsung is finally happy enough to perform these cameras for use on one of its own phones.
As for the other cameras in the Galaxy S23 Ultra, we may not see any major changes. Neither of the two 10MP telephoto cameras (with 3x and 10x zoom) of the S22 Ultra has been altered, according to current rumors. While we haven’t heard anything specific about the 12MP ultra-wide camera or the 40MP selfie camera, general rumors about limited changes between the Galaxy S22 and S23 series make us doubt they’ll stay the same either.
So far, the only changes we can apparently expect for the Galaxy S23 and Galaxy S23 Plus are a new chipset (likely the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 or Exynos 2300) and a new design that looks very similar to the Galaxy S22 Ultra. The Galaxy S23 Ultra is also supposed to get the new chip, as well as a new screen and 200MP camera we already mentioned.
We expect Samsung to launch the Galaxy S23 series, including the Ultra, early next year. It should happen by February, but could arrive as early as mid-January according to some sources.
