Dungeons & Dragons finally fixes one of its most annoying design flaws

Dungeons & Dragons It’s testing a fix for dual-weapon combat, providing players with a way to live out their dual-use fantasies without suffering a massive mechanical setback. Earlier this week, Wizards of the Coast released a new One D&D test that contains reviews of the Bard, Ranger, and Rogue classes as well as a number of other feats and bases. One of the rules buried in the playtest has a small but important review of two-weapon combat, which allows players to fight with a weapon in both hands, provided both weapons are light weapons. Whereas previously players could only attack with their handheld weapon using an additional action, the revised two-weapon combat now states that players can attack with both weapons as part of the same attack move.

This small change should have profound effects on many types of character building. For example, Rangers can now cast a Hunter’s Mark with their overtime and then use both of their weapons to instantly attack their selected enemy. Similarly, Rogue can now launch two attacks with a pair of knives while still using their Cunning Action ability to disengage and get out of harm’s way.

Several other feats and base tweaks also improve the two-weapon combat. For example, short words are now categorized as light weapons, which means that players can use two short words and take advantage of two-weapon combat. This should help counterbalance the negligible decrease for Dual Wielder achievement, which now requires at least one of the player’s two weapons to be a light weapon when dual use. Previously, Dual Wielder action allowed players to use any weapon with one hand when performing a Dual Wielding attack.

If a Ranger chooses to do a Dual Wielder at level 1, they can hypothetically deal a 1D8 + 3D6 + power rating by performing a single attack provided they attack a creature with their Hunter’s Mark. This is a huge blast of damage and makes the sentinel much stronger in combat right from the start.
