Badgers RB talks about shooting Paul Chryst

Wisconsin football star Brylon Allen spoke about giving up Paul Crest on Sunday.

It was a huge shock when Paul Crest was fired as head coach of the Wisconsin football program on Sunday afternoon, in the middle of a Green Bay Packers game though.

The Packers played Jump Around at Lambeau around the time that news broke that Chryst had been abandoned at his alma mater. While most people would expect interim coach Jim Leonard to get the gig full-time this season, not everyone was happy with Crist getting the ax. Wisconsin dropped to 2-3 after being embarrassed by former Illinois coach Brett Bilima, Fighting Illini.

The Badgers star runs backwards through Brylon Allen candidly on Twitter about the big change in training.

While Chryst should have little trouble finding a new team to lead next year, if that’s the path he wants to go down, Wisconsin football hasn’t been the same program since COVID year. Crest came from Pete and helped re-establish a strong identity for ground attack, pound and opportunistic defense. Unfortunately, most of the Big Ten West have settled…

Although Nebraska was a tire fire at Lincoln, Minnesota swayed under PJ Fleck, Illinois finds its foothold under Bielema and Purdue incredibly difficult under Jeff Brohm. You also have two Divisional Hall of Fame head coaches in Kirk Ferencs in Iowa and Pat Fitzgerald in Northwestern. In essence, the easy winnings in the Big Ten West play became more difficult.

What Wisconsin needs is for Leonard to pair up with an innovative offensive coordinator in Madison. He was going to head coach for the Power Five this off season anyway, so let’s give him the Marcus Freeman treatment and see if he can pull that thing together, just like what Dabo Sweeney did to replace Tommy Bowden over a decade ago now. Wisconsin could turn back.

For now, Wisconsin must balance a strongly established identity with a new college football scene. The Big Ten will go to a lower division in time, so Wisconsin’s cleanup days will likely end in the West with the overall schedule being more balanced. While running like Allen will thrive in Madison, the Badgers should get better at throwing them.

This is Wisconsin’s lost season, but hopefully this is the season they honestly press the reset button.
