Famous Google Stadia GDC auctioned for charity

Google Stadia will probably go down in history as one of the biggest failures in the history of the video game industry. In what can only be described as a bit of a warning, the company touted a reveal of the system at Game Developers Conference 2019 with a screen showing three other big business failures: ET For Atari 2600, Nintendo Power Glove and Sega Dreamcast. Written on screen “Anything you dream up can be built,” and it was loaned by Peter Civaldi of the Video Game History Foundation. Following Google’s decision to terminate Stadia, Cifaldi is now auctioning off all three pieces to raise money for the organization.

Cevaldi’s tweet about the auction can be found embedded below. Readers interested in reviewing the auction themselves can do so over here.

As of this writing, the auction price is $2,025, with more than three days left to close. All net auction proceeds will go to the nonprofit. On Twitter, Cifaldi says several people have asked him if the auction also includes a Google Stadia console. Cifaldi said that doesn’t happen because “no one has Stadia, if they did we wouldn’t be here to take advantage of their plight”. It’s hard to disagree with this reasoning, but those interested in bidding should keep this in mind!

Google announced its plans to shut down Stadia just a few days ago. While the end seemed inevitable, the announcement surprised many developers, as they were not informed beforehand. Some games were due to release over the next few weeks, and many were left wondering if their contracts would be honored. The whole thing is a disaster, and it will definitely make some players reluctant to commit to a similar service in the future. While Google plans to compensate users for their Stadia purchases, the future company may not do the same!
