Busan Film Market: Acemaker presents the list of events and titles for revenge

Multi-faceted Korean film company Acemaker Movieworks will unveil four titles in this year’s Asian Content and Film Market, which works in tandem with the Busan International Film Festival. Action and revenge feature prominently as a unifying theme.

The COVID pandemic continues to have a lingering effect on Korean production and movie release scenes. Last year’s protracted theatrical drought led to a short supply of funds for reinvestment and delayed releases. Many of Acemaker’s films were shot in 2020, but she is now only confirming new completion and release dates.

“Remember” is an action drama movie starring Lee Sung Min (“The Spy Gone North”) and Nam Joo Hyuk (best known for TV series “Start-Up” and “Twenty-Five Twenty-One”). Directed by Lee Il Hyung (“Violent Prosecutor”), the story revolves around a retired soldier suffering from dementia, who seeks revenge against the people he believes caused the death of his family. The film is a remake of Atom Egoyan’s thriller Nazi drama of the same name which starred the late Christopher Plummer. Remembering will be released in theaters in Korea on October 26, 2022.

Another action drama with a vengeful theme is Mind Man, which premiered last month in the Toronto Film Festival presentations section. The protagonist of the story, played by Jung Woo Sung (“Hunt”), is released from prison after 10 years. He seeks to lead a normal life, only to discover that his daughter has been kidnapped by his former boss, leaving him no choice but to resort to violence for revenge. Kim Nam Gil (“Declaration of Emergency”) and Kim Joon Han (“Beasts Clawing At Straws”) also star in this Jung’s directorial debut.

The facts-based “Firemen” is set in a fire station in Seoul and is a story of sacrifices. Directed by Kwak Kyung Taek (“Seated File”, “Friend”), the film features Kwak Do-Won (“Steel Rain 2: Summit”) and Joo Won (“Carter”).

The company also serves crime noir “dirty money”. You see two detectives struggling to make ends meet, and succumbing to temptation when dealing with a large sum of money. The photo is the directorial debut feature of Kim Min Soo and stars Jung Woo (“Hot Blooded”) and Kim Dae Myeong (“The Drug King”).

Founded in 2018 by Jung Hyun-joo, the former head of film investment and production at Showbox, Acemaker today extends to investing in film, production and distribution. It has had a mixture of box office success and festival success so far. Among them are the action thriller “The Gangster, the Cop, the Devil”, the mystery thriller “The Anchor”, the crime drama “The Policeman’s Lineage” and the romantic comedy “New Year Blues”.
