Houston Cougars introduce 10-year-old lupus patient Jace Abarca as part of potential Final Four team!

Houston, Texas (KTRK) – The Houston Cougars men’s basketball team has the last four College aspirations especially with the amazing college sports happening in H-Town.

If they’ve gone all season, they might have another star recruit to thank.

The team on Tuesday introduced 10-year-old Jess Abarca as part of Team Cogs. He is expected to play a pivotal role for the team, not just for the ball boy duties that he will accomplish throughout the season.

Jess, who suffers from lupus and a kidney disorder, hopes to be the inspiration for the next challenging cougars games.

“I think that’s what got us here. It’s just the drive, the way he inspires us all around him,” James Abarca, Jess’s father, said in Tuesday’s introduction. “When he was facing (his illness), he was the one who was taking us and motivating us to get through a lot of things. Just his positive attitude, and his love for life.”

“He can help motivate (the Cougars) just as much as he did for us,” James continued.

Jace’s joining UH is made possible by Team Effect. This nonprofit organization matches children facing serious illness and disability with college sports teams to create a long-lasting and life-changing experience for all involved.

Jess, his siblings, and his parents were all part of a letter of intent to sign at Guy’s Lewis Development Facility, where they met head coach Kelvin Sampson and other stars on the team.

Jace and the Coogs kicks off the season on November 7, when they visit northern Colorado’s Fertita Center.
