Nobu Matsuhisa was born on March 10, 1949 in Saitama Prefecture, Japan. He has two older brothers. When Nobu was seven, his father was killed in a car accident, and he was later raised by his mother. The family began traveling the world after the death of the patriarch, exposing Nobu to a wide range of world cultures, with all their beauty and imperfections.
career beginnings
After graduating from high school, Nobu got a job as a dishwasher at Matsu Sushi Restaurant in Shinjuku, Tokyo. In the end, he got trained as a sushi expert there. Seven years into his business, Nobu received an invitation from a regular customer of the restaurant, a Japanese of Peruvian origin, to open his own restaurant in Peru. Acting on this advice, Nobu moved to Lima, Peru in 1973 and opened a Matsu Restaurant with his sponsor. Since he was unable to locate many of the key ingredients he used back home in Japan, Nobu had to improvise. As a result, he began to develop his own distinctive style of cooking that combined Japanese and Peruvian cuisines.
After three years in business, Nobu was forced to close his restaurant in Lima. He then moved to Argentina, and then to Anchorage, Alaska, where he was able to open a new restaurant. Unfortunately, the restaurant burned down about two weeks after it opened due to an electrical fire. Nobu moved to Los Angeles, California in 1977, and worked for a time at Japanese restaurants Oshou and Mitsuwa.

Restaurant expansion
In 1987, Nobu opened his first Matsuhisa restaurant in Beverly Hills, California. It has gone on to become one of the city’s trendiest spots, as well as being a favorite of celebrities. One such celebrity, Robert De Niro, soon became Nobu’s constant friend and business partner. A particular fan of the miso chef’s black cod, the Academy Award-winning actor convinced Nobu to expand his culinary empire to the East Coast. In a joint venture with De Niro—plus investor Meir Teper and fellow restaurateur Drew Nieporent—Nobu opened the first Nobu-branded restaurant in New York’s Tribeca neighborhood in 1994. Three years later, Nobu expanded abroad to London. The chain subsequently opened locations in Malibu, Tokyo, and Las Vegas. Matsuhisa Restaurant has also opened in Aspen, Colorado.
Nobu restaurants continued to open in locations around the world at 21Street century. Restaurants have been added in cities like Miami. Dallas. Dubai; Hong Kong. Waikiki. San Diego; Melbourne. Perth. After establishing his culinary empire, Nobu branched out into the hospitality industry, opening upscale hotels in places around the world. Among the crown jewels of the hotel chain is the Nobu Hotel Miami Beach, which features Japanese architecture, panoramic ocean views, and high-end appliances and facilities.
Nobu hotels served as the locations for the famous World of Nobu culinary event. The global festival brings in dozens of chefs from Nobu restaurants around the world for events such as themed dinners, master classes and tastings. World of Nobu proceeds go towards various charitable organizations.
