Acquisition of Microsoft Activision takes a significant step

The Microsoft Activision acquisition is a milestone, but it also looks ahead to some other potential hurdles and issues. The Microsoft and Activision deal is one of the biggest in gaming history, which means it faces intense scrutiny from a number of angles. The nearly $70 billion deal will give Microsoft access to developers like Infinity Ward, Blizzard Entertainment, and franchises like Call of Duty, Overwatch and World of Warcraft. All of these amazing additions will add to the Xbox arsenal as Sony continues to produce world-class titles like The Last of Us and God of War. However, not many believe that such a deal should take place. The head of PlayStation, Jim Ryan, has expressed concerns about the deal and has spoken with regulators about the matter, but he hasn’t stopped anything yet.

Today, the Brazilian competition regulator, CADE, approved Microsoft’s acquisition of Activision without restrictions. Since different regulators have to sign off on the deal, this is a huge problem and could bode well for other regulators. However, as reported by Dealreporter (By searching for alpha) The US FTC reportedly has “significant concerns” regarding the acquisition and has spoken with Sony and Google about the deal. As of now, it remains to be seen what happens, but November will be a big month for the deal. European Union regulators will make a decision by early November and the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) will provide an update on its ruling by the end of next month.

Given the sheer scale of this acquisition and the potential ramifications it could have on the industry, it’s understandable why there is some concern. It’s important for regulators to check everything with a fine tooth comb and really understand what the implications of such a deal are. Microsoft has already gone to great lengths to defend its side of the deal by launching a website that clearly outlines the benefits to players, developers, the industry and what some of its long-term plans are.
