Oscars “White Noise” by Noah Baumbach, Adam Driver and Greta Gerwig

White Noise may be the quietest high-profile Oscar movie of the past decade: a Netflix movie by Noah Baumbach, a two-time Academy Award-nominated screenwriter whose last film was nominated for Best Picture, has a cast that includes Adam Driver and a score of 89% on Rotten Tomatoes. However, the engagement was oddly muted for the first-ever film that served as the opening film for the Venice and New York Film Festival. but why?

“Unfilmable” source material

This will likely start with the source material. Bombach’s adaptation of Don DeLillo’s bizarre novel is about Jack Gladney (Driver), Hitler’s studies professor at College-on-the-Hill. He lives with his wife Babette (Greta Gerwig) and their four children, but when a “toxic airborne event” occurs in their community, the family must grapple with the universal mysteries of love and death..

During his introductory remarks at Alice Tully Hall at Lincoln Center on September 30, Bombash joked about the book’s “unphotogenic” reputation. The writer and director has long been a staple of the festival, with “White Noise” marking his eighth film there.

His other works include: “Kicking and Screaming” (1995), “Squid and the Whale” (2005), “Margot at the Wedding” (2007), “Francis Ha” (2012), “Meyrowitz Stories (new and identified) (2017) and “A Marriage Story” (2019), which was the focus of the selection. His film “While We Are Young” (2014) was a “surprise” secret screening at the 52nd NYFF.

It can struggle with the masses and the electorate of the industry in general

“White Noise” evokes Paul Thomas Anderson’s “Inherent Vice” (2014) with a touch of “National Vacation Satire” (1983) and any midway through Wes Anderson’s career.

There seem to be two main demographics of “white noise” – intellectual cinema buffs and film students who would call this generation the quintessential college-defining film like “The Boondock Saints” (1999). This appears to be the main obstacle.

Undoubtedly Baumbach’s biggest film ever created, it immerses itself in different genres, perhaps too much in reality. Netflix will need to focus on getting industry voters to see it on the big screen, while also selling it to appeal to an audience, both of which can be difficult.

The technical classes are in play, but the major classes can be challenging.

With Star Driver in the lead role, the two-time Academy Award nominee for BlacKkKlansman (2018) and “Wedding Story” (2019) has risen to the ranks of one of the most versatile actors in the business today. While he commands the respect of his teammates, the contenders in his class will simply be too boisterous to beat.

Greta Gerwig, who has established Hollywood credit with her two Academy Award-nominated directorial features, “Lady Bird” (2017) and “Little Women” (2019), is regressing in front of the camera as an actress, her first since her overlooked role. Mike Mills, “Women of the Twentieth Century” (2016). Playing wife and mother Babbitt, whose elusive situation becomes entangled in narrative puzzles, Gerwig gets key moments to shine, particularly through the exciting and emotional one-on-one dialogue in the second half of the film. Netflix Confirms Exclusive For diverse, will be presented to support the actress during awards season. With an apparently open race still emerging, perhaps the player could find some tug of war with it.

Featuring adorable still pieces from two-time Academy Award-nominated production designer Jess Goncourt (2010’s “True Grit” and 2016’s “Hail, Caesar!”) and Emmy-nominated set decorator Claire Kaufman (American Horror Story), along with the ’80s. The threads of the era for legendary fashion designer Anne Roth, who currently holds the record for the oldest woman ever to win a competitive Oscar for “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” (2020).

Another racy, lively musical composition from four-time nominee Danny Elfman and original song “New Body Rumba” from LCD Soundsystem, ends the tale, which features a fun and unexpected musical dance sequence that might fit in with “You Make My Dreams of” (500) Days of Summer. (2009) and Aquarius from “40-Year-Old Virgo” (2005) as the most memorable in recent memory. Elfman has been a film fan favorite in the composer world, racking up four Oscar nominations throughout his career – “Good Will Hunting” (1997), “Men in Black” (1997), “Big Fish” (2003), “Milk” (2008) – with no statuette yet to be won. Late narrative may work miracles For him, similar to Ennio Morricone’s win in The Hateful Eight (2015), although there are no major names in the movie.

Were Venice and NYFF the Best Festivals to Show for the First Time?

Even after making history as the first film ever to be selected on opening night at the Venice and New York Film Festivals, the hype was strangely silenced. A lukewarm 150-second applause began in Italy, but quickly turned back after Brendan Fraser’s viral moment after the “Whale” and “Don’t Worry Baby” debates dominated the headlines.

During his turn on the mic at the New York Film Festival, artistic director Dennis Lim paid tribute to another filmmaker with a longer résumé for NYFF: French author Jean-Luc Goddard, who died in September at the age of 91. More than 25 of his films were shown at the festival, and his latest film “The Book of Pictures” (2018), will be shown for free, according to the festival’s first week’s episode schedule.

The popular East Coast festival, which is celebrating its 60th anniversary, is undergoing an evolution and looks to establish itself in the world of places where Oscar aspirants and dynamic filmmakers must pause amid a leadership shift; CEO Eugene Hernandez is leaving to head the Sundance Film Festival. In his opening speech on the night, Lim said that “white noise” exemplifies the spirit of the festival at this moment.

Their long NYFF records point to a potential problem that has yet to be addressed, a constant return to the same well of managers. With the Hollywood industry creeping in, even drifting toward progress, one could argue that the New York Film Festival, and the general state of film criticism, is not open enough to new dynamic voices.

Over the past decade, New York Film Festival opening night films have come from the likes of Joel Coen (“The Tragedy of Macbeth”), Martin Scorsese (“The Irishman”), Richard Linklater (“The Last Flag Flight”) and Ang Lee (“Life of Pi”), playing All of them festival several times.

Netflix simply has better options

Netflix is still confident about its award prospects, and to be honest, they should be. Look out for the movie for the Golden Globes to enjoy when they return in January, and with a seemingly adapted screenplay race, Baumbach could find his way into the Oscars discussion.

The hottest contender for the live stream is Rian Johnson’s “Glass Onion: A Knives Out Story,” which played like Toronto gangsters. Despite highly mixed reviews and a 22-minute short storyline, Alejandro González Iñárritu’s “Bardo (or False Chronicle of a Handful of Truths)” might be more likely given his previous record with the Academy.

Produced by Baumbach and Uri Singer, White Noise stars Don Cheadle, Jodie Turner-Smith, André Benjamin, Raffey Cassidy, May Nivola and Sam Nivola, the sons of brilliant actor Alessandro Nivola.

It opens in theaters November 25 before hitting Netflix on December 30.
