LGBTQ Houston: HPD safety seminar held as Texas challenge to federal anti-discrimination law upheld!

Houston, Texas (KTRK) – The timing of the Houston Police Safety Seminar scheduled for Thursday night for the city’s LGBTQIA+ community was hard to ignore.

The event, hosted by the department coordinator for this community, featured President Troy Viner and members affiliated with HPD departments such as Victims Services, Hate Crimes, Homicides, and Community Affairs.

Unfortunately for those present, a political cloud hung over the proceedings.

As reported by our partners in Houston Chroniclea federal judge recently ruled in favor of Texas’ challenge to the Biden administration’s guidance on anti-discrimination practices regarding LGBT employees.

What does this mean? The ruling exposes LGBTQ workers to termination because of the way they dress, their consciences, or the bathroom they use — all that Biden’s guidelines aim to stop.

The US Department of Justice may appeal.

As for the evening’s event, attendees expressed concern that they had been holding on to it for years – feeling that their problems were being ignored or not taken seriously.

One issue that remains outstanding for both the LGBTQ community and the police is solving crimes against them. At 10, Eyewitness News shows how police managed to get a reluctant victim to attack her face to report her crime.
