Final Fantasy 14 Gamers who haven’t updated their login credentials in a while may want to consider doing so soon after a hack attempt directed at Square Enix’s account management system. Square Enix warned this week that it had noticed that it was “under attack” as someone was trying to access users’ accounts via login information obtained elsewhere. If the trend continues, Square Enix said it could make it so that every user has to reset their password.
Based on what Square Enix described in a post on Final Fantasy 14 Lodeston siteThis wasn’t a hacking attempt where someone was trying to upload passwords and emails from the Square Enix account management system itself, but instead it was an attempt where people were trying to access accounts using login credentials they got from other sites. Pretty much any website where you create an account will warn you not to use the same email and password combination you used elsewhere for lest exactly that sort of thing happen. As such, Square Enix would love it if you reset your password in light of this attack if you used the same password elsewhere.
So, what is Square Enix doing to accounts that may have been affected by this? The publisher said it “currently mitigates the impact of the attack by restricting access to accounts we believe may have been compromised by unauthorized users” which means you may receive an email asking you to reset your password if someone tries to access your account. If this continues, a broader password reset may be initiated.
“If we continue to experience increasing numbers of unauthorized access attempts, a password reset may be initiated for all Square Enix accounts,” Square Enix said in the conclusion. “We would like to remind all users to consider the security of their accounts in order to protect personal information and data.”
