Westheimer hit-and-run: Family of Army vet Jerry Young asks for help in identifying person responsible who struck him with car!

Houston, Texas (KTRK) – An army veteran was killed while walking through Westheimer Road, and his family is asking for the public’s help in determining who is responsible.

On Friday, September 16, Houston police officers were called to Building 8800 of Westheimer Rd. At approximately 5:15 a.m., officers determined that the veteran, known as Jerry Young, was trying to cross the street with his walk before he was injured.

Young is said to have been hit by a vehicle and towed for more than a mile.

Investigators said the driver never stopped to provide assistance.

“To get him to run a mile and a half, I should know why. Why did they do that? Why did they leave him in body parts? He was a human being with people taking care of him,” Gerlin Jones, Young’s ex-wife said.

Jones says Young was a veteran who was deployed to Germany and served in the 1970s.

They share two children. He had a brother and sister and an extended family whom he loved very much.

Young struggled with substance abuse and mental disorder, but showed his love for his children the only way he knew how, Jones said.

“I think he was doing good to get away.”

Young’s ex-wife also said that he refused shelter and help from his family, and became homeless. Jones says she believes it was due to a lack of services to assist veterans.

But his family is searching and fighting for justice for the man who served his country.

“Someone should know because someone came home with a car that day that was badly damaged, or they didn’t bring the car home, and their story doesn’t add up.”

“Please be careful when you see pedestrians,” Jones said. “They have a right of way.”

Crime stoppers may pay up to $5,000 for any information that leads to the suspect(s) being charged or, in this case, arrested. Information can be reported by calling 713-222-TIPS (8477) or submitting it online.
