Producer Sonic the Hedgehog describes the initial reaction to the design as “the worst thing that could happen”

One of the producers on sonic the hedgehog The movie recently reflected on the titular character’s original design and turned the backlash into something positive. Sonic the Hedgehog is one of the most recognizable characters. Even if you’ve never played games, his dark and luminous blue fur, big red sneakers, white gloves, and his strangely eyes look like sore thumbs. No other character is like him and its overall design hasn’t changed much over the years when looking at the transition from 2D to 3D and video games to animation. However, Sonic had a really shocking look on his first outing on the big screen.

The initial design was based on some kind of reality, so Sonic could practically interact with real-world objects, he had real sneakers, and other things, however, people were bothered by his appearance. He expressed how he went to tell director Jeff Fowler to deal with the backlash and was proud to know that Fowler had already acknowledged the matter before the studio released a PR statement. Miller also denied that Paramount had intentionally released a poorly designed soundtrack to provoke publicity for the film, stating that the accident was “the worst luck thing that could happen.” He specifically noted that it allowed fans the ability to feel heard and have a sense of ownership over the final film.

The choice to redesign Sonic worked wonders sonic the hedgehog. The film was such a hit and spawned an equally successful sequel that it even prompted Paramount to give the green light for a third film before the second film was released. Whether or not the original design really hurt the movie is a mystery, but it’s undeniable that the redesign was a net positive for the franchise.
