Anne Rice interview with the vampiree premiered last week on AMC and AMC+, giving life on the small screen a new adaptation of the late writer’s beloved and iconic novel of the same name. With the series’ storyline—specifically reminiscent of Louis de Points du Lac—beginning in the 20th century in New Orleans, the series marks a little departure from Rice’s novel, but for the series’ stars, even with the story inhabiting it is fresh. In time among other shifts in detail, it was Rice’s books that contributed to the development of their characters and their work on the series.
“We’ve all done a lot of research,” said Billy Bass, who plays baby vampire Claudia. ComicBook.com. “We worked really hard. We read the books, and I remember looking back at the books while we were shooting as well. I was going to bring the book, the whole blogged book I’m going to bring to tune in. All aspects and all my notes must be tuned in. And because we were so loyal to these characters, we really loved the playing. On her. We felt it was such an honor to be in this world. It was easy because we did all the work in the future from the time when we stepped onto the set, we just lived in this world and in these characters. And that was so real.”
For Sam Reed, who plays Lestat de Lioncourt, he’s back in the books any time he needs to decide how to handle a particular scene.
“The important thing for me was that every time I got confused about how to approach a scene, I would go back to books and look up similar scenes or look for references or anything you could rely on,” Reed said. ComicBook.com. “But yeah, I think I’ve been reading too for a long time, so I put a lot of pressure on myself to be able to make my idea of what it was, which can be stressful at times because you really want to do it justice.”
It’s an approach that appears to have worked. Bass explained that there were times when Reed got into the character, it was really scary.
“There was a moment when I was doing a scene with Sam and scared the crap out of me, so much so that the director, he came up to me and he was like, ‘Billy, you have to be strong. You have to be strong.’ And then in my head, I’m like, ‘Billy was terrified,'” said Bass. But I’ll go back inside and be a strong Claudia, “because it gets so real.”
