Billy Bass on how Claudia has the same ‘core’ from the book

Last week, AMC was eagerly anticipating the adaptation of Ann Rice Interview with a vampire It debuted on both the network and AMC+, bringing the beloved novel to life in a whole new way — including a few changes to some of the novel’s details. Among the changes that viewers will see from page to page as the first season of the series continues, is a major transformation of baby vampire Claudia. Played on Claudia played by Billy Bass, this new game is slightly older than its literary counterpart, but according to Bass, although the character you see on screen is different, it has the same essence as Claudia from the novel.

“At the end of the day, it’s the same as Claudia,” Bass said. ComicBook.com. “She has the same essence in the book. You see this brutal, strong, strong, independence-loving, little vampire stuck in this body. The only difference is now that she’s 14 and I’m black. Ann Rice was one of the most diverse, pro-LGBT people, Because of that you see that it translates so easily in this world. All we did was make it in 1910 and change the look of the characters a little bit, but it just opened the door for more expression on screen.”

Bass went on to make it clear that for her, a big part of that expression was Claudia’s hair and having a natural texture as part of this character’s authenticity.

“A big part of it was my hair,” Bass said. “I feel like curly hair isn’t represented on screen very often, and if it is, it’s not in a way that it’s always embraced. And I’ve made an effort to make sure we’ve been representing Claudia’s hair all her life, through her experience she’s never quite agreed, I’ve already discussed it. I’m like, “Should you try to straighten her hair in some of these scenes?” and I’m like “No, Claudia’s beauty is that she never wants to be like everyone else.” Despite being stuck in that body, she doesn’t want to be another woman, She wants to be older, and that’s her beauty. She’s so strong.”

And for Bess, it’s that aspect of not only Claudia but the whole world of Interview with the Vampire that she feels invites fans to.

“What’s nice about vampires and what’s really nice about this show is that it’s in the fantasy genre, but it has so much depth that it allows people to feel visible in a way that they’re not always seen on screen but lost in the world. So, it’s not in the Your face, they can just sit back and enjoy something, and then at the end of the episode, they say, “Wow, this guy looks like me,” or “Wow, I remember feeling this way when I was that age,” or “Oh my God, my kid is acting that way.” “

Interview with a vampire It airs on Sundays at 10/9c on AMC and AMC+.
