“This is a kick in the balls,” Scherzer said. “You sacrifice everything in your life to be able to get out there. You push through every injury. Guys play through injuries. The Mets won 101 regular season games. They had NL East on hand and let the Braves take it from them at the end. They ended up on the Wild Card Tour and got bogged down by the Padres despite being the better team for longer this season. This was a window to this team. They have a plethora of questions to solve with potential free agents, including Chris Bassett, Carlos Carrasco, Jacob Degrom, Edwin Diaz, Michal Geffen, Seth Lugo, Trevor May, Brandon Nemo, Adam Ottavino, Taiwan Walker and Trevor Williams.
Scherzer has signed a three-year contract, so he’ll still be around, but the team around him could be very different in 2023.
