The St. Louis Cardinals are sure to have a different look in 2023. With some legends retired, other players may leave to remake the squad.
Albert Pujols and Yadir Molina played in their last matches with the St. Louis Cardinals. With these two legends gone, as well as Adam Wainwright expecting to decide his future with the club soon, the Cardinal could enjoy a whole new look.
Paul Goldschmidt and Nolan Arenado will return as the main stars of the team. They will lead many talented young players such as Tommy Edman, Tyler O’Neill, Dylan Carlson, Lars Nootbaar and Brendan Donovan.
There are some players that the Cardinals must move on from, whether via free agency or trade, to improve in some key areas.
Cardinals should trade bowler Dakota Hudson
Dakota Hudson is getting frustrated to watch the 2022 season as he becomes one of the slowest bowlers in the business in Major League Baseball.
In 27 games, Hudson set an 8-7 record with a 4.45 ERA in 139.2 innings. He threw 78 hits a season. He gave up 141 results and 69 earned runs, including nine home runs. Walked 61 hitters.
He used a sinker, slider, four-seat speed ball, curve ball, and changeover. He had a 33.7 percent inhalation rate on his cornering ball and was able to keep 16.5 percent of hits on the court. That’s not great considering it’s supposed to be his best stadium.
Hudson had a few stints on the injured list and was eventually demoted to the Memphis Redbirds on September 5. He was called up on September 18, only to be selected to return to Memphis on October 5. Cards list.
Manager Oli Marmol has indicated his expectations of Hudson during multiple post-match interviews with the hope that he will work towards being more of a footballer than they expected him to be with the team. Marmol was frustrated, which led to Hudson’s demotion.
Hudson will be in his second qualifying season to referee in 2023. The team can decide to work with him in the off-season to see if he can develop into the globetrotter they hope to be or they can move on.
Hudson’s best season for the Cardinals was 2019 when he had a 16-7 record with a 3.35 ERA over 32 starts. Since then, the team has dealt with a short COVID season and Hudson has recovered from Tommy John’s surgery. However, Hudson did not return to the bowler the team had hoped to get.
If they could trade it off, a change of scenery might be beneficial to Hudson.
