Once and Future #30 review

After 30 issues of legends, myths and heartbreak, time and futureThe end has finally arrived. I have to admit the mixed feelings because this series has become one of my all-time favorite stories, so there’s an inherent sadness in saying goodbye. However, Kieron Gillen, Dan Mora, Tamra Bonvillain, Ed Dukeshire, Madison Goyette, and Dafna Pleban have created a truly special series and a sunset finish that offers satisfying rewards with just a hint of hope for added comfort. Line. time and future #30 is a totally satisfying farewell to one of the most inventive and imaginative stories in the comics, and we hope this won’t be the last time we’re back in this amazing world.

time and future #29 has left us with several lingering threads, and version 30 impressively handles all of them in satisfying ways. Sure, I would have been fine with 10 more pages to sort it all out, but Gillen pulls these threads together into a satisfying conclusion that doesn’t take away those individual moments or characters from their impact. Perhaps the biggest benefactor is Lancelot, who was a key factor but may not have had the opportunity to show how he perceives the story and what he ultimately hopes his role in it will be. Here we get a real glimpse of both before he charges, making his arc full circle.

Maura and Bonvillain wonder what wonders about this matter, but if you’ve got an epic dragon fight on your wishlist this week, you’re in for a treat. Battles throughout this issue range from fantasy to super character, and no matter the approach, they always make it happen. Honestly, dragons are simply awesome, so watching battles that take up the entire page will always pop up, but this is balanced out by more intimate but no less tense encounters that hit like freight trains.

As one might expect, Bridget is at the center of this issue, but in a very different way than we are used to. We’re used to the sarcasm and the rude exterior that protects the golden heart, but we don’t see the unfortunate and vulnerable side of a Gran very often — someone who doesn’t just realize what someone else has gone through, but her part in that process. These sequences are some of the most important and most heartbreaking in both the issue and the series.

This is especially true of one sequence at the end, which is at the same time hopeful and sullen. This is what makes the last few pages so effective. You’ve been rooting for this trio over the course of the entire adventure and it’s great to see a real growth in them all without sacrificing the ones at heart. Despite being amidst so many other key moments and the amount of dialogue needed to move forward, Dukeshire is able to use every inch of the page to let it breathe, and moments that need more detail to get that welcoming bit of cuteness to send over the top.

had brought time and future To finish effectively has always been difficult, but Case 30 meets that high and delivers a satisfying conclusion to this exciting chapter with a wink toward what the future can hold. I really can’t wait to get back to this story again from the beginning.
