Lionsgate TV signs first-look deal with producers of ‘High on the Hog’

Karis Jagger and Fabian Tupac have struck a First Sight deal with Lionsgate Television.

Under the deal, they will develop and produce unwritten documentaries under the Hey Sistah Productions banner. Lionsgate’s Pilgrim Media Group, which focuses on unrecorded programming, will provide development support and will act as a production services entity for the projects sold.

Jagger and Tupac are best known for producing “High on the Hog: How African American Cuisine Transformed America,” a Netflix documentary series based on Dr. Jessica Harris’ book of the same name. The series follows food writer Stephen Satterfield on a culinary journey alongside chefs, historians, and activists who celebrate the bravery, art, and resourcefulness of the African American people.

The producers are old friends who began collaborating in 2011, producing and directing a series of short films for The New York Times before selecting “High on the Hog” and partnering with Pilgrim Media Group and Roger Ross Williams/One Story Up. The series, which recently won Peabody Awards, NAACP and AAFCA Awards, is now in production for its second season.

Jäger and Tupac previously created the food, friendship and culture blog Hey Sistah and then moved the brand to a production banner, where they are currently developing projects that explore food science and feminine narratives.

“As early heroes of ‘High on the Hog,’ we couldn’t have been more excited about our partnership with the Lionsgate Pilgrim family. We can’t wait for this new chapter and look forward to expanding our reach to the important stories,” said Jagger and Tupac.

“Karis and Fabienne have a unique ability to identify intellectual property that uses exploration of the past as a tool to highlight cultural themes in a timely manner,” said Lionsgate Nonfiction Television and Pilgrim President and CEO Craig Piligian. “We look forward to helping them create a wide range of content.”

Pilgrim’s in-house attorney Jennifer Soria negotiated the Lionsgate and Pilgrim deal. Jagger is represented by Fox Rothschild and Tupac by Utah and Fox by Rothschild.
