Finola Hughes reflects on decades of ‘General Hospital’!

New York — “General Hospital” recorded its 15,000th episode last June, and will pass another stage early next year when the program celebrates its 60th anniversary on ABC.

It is the longest running American television series still on the air.

Venola Hughes first joined the cast in the spring of 1985, and after all these years, she finds her character, Anna Devan, involved in a steamy love affair with Valentine Casadin, played by James Patrick Stewart.

Their on-screen relationship has been praised as “original” and “electric,” which is unusual since both stars have decades of acting experience.

“Being in Hollywood, you’re constantly reminded that it’s over. It’s over, and we’re not,” Venola said. “And I’d like to think I might be carrying a torch for women everywhere.”

The two characters are one-time enemies and found love last summer for General Hospital.

The show’s writers took their time bringing the pair together.

“I don’t want to rush it, we can slow down next time,” Valentine said to Anna.

“People just got kind of crazy about it,” Venola added. “Twitter has exploded, and I have to say at this point in my life for people to react so well to the love scene on TV, I was amazed.”

The tweets of some of the younger fans were more interesting.

“They weren’t sure to watch this because they are adults, and I really liked it,” she said. “And I retweeted that because it was, two adults on TV in bed.”

Venola describes this as “satisfaction” after a career spanning many decades.

After all, it’s been 40 years since she was in “Stay Alive” opposite John Travolta on the big screen.

“Maybe we’re just starting to consider women that they don’t have a ‘sell’ history,” she said. “It would be great. We won a hard-earned battle.”

“General Hospital” airs every weekday afternoon on ABC.
