“Hidden Messages” Acquired by Cargo Film & Releasing, Trailer Revealed

Cargo Film & Releasing has acquired the domestic and international rights to Violet Du Feng’s feature documentary film “Hidden Letters”.

The film had its world premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival and its European premiere at the BFI London Film Festival. It won Best Documentary and Audience Award at the Austin Asian American Film Festival.

Cargo will premiere the movie theatrically starting in New York and Los Angeles on December 9.

“Hidden Letters” follows two Chinese millennials whose passions link them to Nushu, a secret, female-only language that for centuries has allowed women to communicate in private without men understanding their correspondence.

While practices like foot binding are long gone, the film highlights contemporary millennial women’s ongoing struggle to shape their own paths in today’s patriarchal climate in China, and the value of brotherhood they can support along the way. The timely film focuses on how women’s networks of communication remain an important lifeline around the world today, described by Gloria Steinem as a “deep and powerful rebellion.”

The film’s outreach and marketing campaign is supported by the Asia and Pacific Islander community of change makers, Gold House, which will co-host the December 9 screening at Landmark’s Quad Cinema in New York City.

The film features original music by Grammy-nominated singer Leona Lewis. “As an artist, I fell in love with this story. Using art to build global sisterhood and raise women’s voices is extremely important to me. I loved co-composing part of a beautiful soundtrack and I hope the story touches your heart as much as it did mine.”

Du Feng’s filmmaking credits include producing “Dear Mom, I Mean To Write About Death,” “Singing in the Wild,” “Confucian Dream,” “Mainland,” and “Please Remember Me.” She is the 2018 Sundance Creative Production Fellow.

Du Feng said, “I knew I wanted to tell a contemporary story, to relate Nushu to the state of women’s experiences in China today. With the rise of the global backsliding on women’s rights, my heart is filled with joy when I see how the resistance and wisdom that Nushu once represented are being accepted by the masses in the whole world “.

The documentary is a co-production of Fish + Bear Pictures, Ten Thousand Images, Independent Television Service (ITVS), and Arte/ZDF, in association with Bird Street Productions, Chicken and Egg Pictures, EST Media and Nika Media. Among the producers of Emmy-nominated “Hidden Letters” are Mette Cheng Munthe-Kaas, Peabody Jean Tsien Award winner and 2015 Women at Sundance Fellow Su Kim.
