Bayonetta’s original voice actress says she was only offered $4,000 to return

Voice actress Helena Taylor, who will be recognized by many as the original voice of Bionetta, is no longer returning to the role of Bayonetta 3, due out on October 28, and this weekend took to social media to explain why. In a video clip attached to Twitter In the post sent to Taylor’s account, the actress explained that she was only offered $4,000 to work on the game, and now she’s calling for a boycott.

“The final offer to do the whole game, as a buy-out offer, for a fixed price, was four thousand US dollars. That’s an insult to me, the amount of time it took me to work on my talent, and everything I gave for this and Taylor explained in the video.” She lists her credentials as well, saying that she studied acting for seven and a half years – three years at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art (LAMDA) and four and a half years in Los Angeles with “legendary Larry Moss”.

Taylor’s perceived humiliation is also a factor in the success of the Bayonetta series. During the first two games, in which she provided the voice of the title character, she cited an estimate that the series brought in approximately $450 million, not counting revenue from the sale of merchandise. Taylor verified the lack of legitimacy in her cash offer, though she feels the pay offered is “immoral”.

“I didn’t want the world,” she said. “I didn’t ask for much. I was just asking for a decent wage and a decent living.” In her request for fans to boycott the upcoming title, she asked them to take the money they would have spent on the game and instead donate it to charity.

Bayonetta was originally released in 2009 for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. Its direct sequel, Bayonetta 2, followed in 2014 as a Nintendo exclusive, appearing on Wii U and Switch. The third installment, which features Jennifer Hale as the voice of Bayonetta, is due out later this month exclusively for Switch.
