Shooting in Raleigh: Teen suspect may be tried as an adult in North Carolina, Wake County District Attorney Lorrin Freeman says!

Raleigh, North Carolina – While Raleigh police continue to investigate after Thursday heavy gunfire which killed five people and injured two others, speculation revolves around the suspected event and its possible motives.

Police confirmed that the suspect was a 15-year-old boy. Raleigh police said he is in hospital in a critical condition.

It is not clear if he cut himself or injured him when officers took him into custody Thursday night.

The suspect is close to one of the victims.

“Based on the mass deaths and violence here, it is our intention to file charges against him as an adult and to apply to the Supreme Court in this case,” Wake County District Attorney Lauren Freeman said Friday.

Freeman added that the maximum sentence would be life without parole if tried as an adult, WTVD reported.

“This is the first time we’ve had this kind of mass shooting in the 25 years I’ve worked within the criminal justice system, so there’s no doubt for us and the community to know that today, so many people have woken up simultaneously without loving it,” Freeman said. “. “This is a different kind of issue, there’s no doubt about that.”

She also said that state law makes all petitions confidential.

She added that within 15 days of being served, the suspect would be entitled to a probable cause of hearing (which could be changed due to his mental health or physical condition.

Since the suspect was admitted to the hospital, Freeman said, he has not been served.

Raleigh police said Friday morning that these five were the victims who died in the shooting:

  • Nicole Connors, 52
  • Susan Karnats, 49
  • Mary Marshall, 35 years old
  • Gabriel Torres, 29
  • James Thompson, 16

The other two were infected and remain on WakeMed:

  • Marcel Gardner, 59
  • The 15-year-old suspect

Two of the victims were police officers.

Gabriel Torres was an off-duty officer killed in the shooting. He was on his way to work when he was shot.

“This is a very traumatic event for our officers and I,” said Estella Patterson, chief of RPD. “I was immediately shocked by what happened.”

Casey Joseph Clark, 33, is a K-9 therapist who was wounded in the shooting, but has since been released from the hospital.

The victim, 16-year-old James Thompson, was a junior at Knightdale High School.

“This is a very difficult time for our school community as well as for the wider Raleigh community,” School Principal Keith Richardson Written in a statement to parents. He went on to say that advisors and a crisis team in the area will be available on campus for the next week to support anyone who needs help.

“There are many families in our community waking up this morning without their loved ones,” said Mary Ann Baldwin, Mayor of Raleigh. “No one can imagine what they are all going through.”
