In Game 4 of their NLDS series against the Phillies, Braves player Ronald Acuña made a defensive error that triggered JT Realmuto indoors. He is still called up days later.
Acuña is a formidable talent, a five-tool player at his best. However, even the best baseball players make mistakes, and that’s exactly what happened with Acuña in Game 4.
On a deep fly ball for quarterback Michael Harris II, the ball bounced oddly off the court wall. Instead of Acuña supporting Harris II, as would usual protocol, the right-handed All-Star player was nowhere to be found. Braves Radio announcer Joe Simpson hinted that Acuña was lazy in the play, as if he had failed to support Harris II on purpose.
Simpson gold a little later What most radio broadcasters can save about a player like Acuña. Sure, his mistake cost the Braves a tour, but they probably didn’t win that match regardless.
Brave fans come to the defense of Ronald Acuna
Acuña sinned, but his livelihood and efforts should not be questioned because of this. This is the point most Braves fans made when they came to Acuña’s defense on social media.
There is plenty of blame to go around in Atlanta’s loss to the Phillies. Namely, Austin Riley and Dansby Swanson and some lackluster statements from the base machine. This team is still far from the world title after just one year. Prior to that, the Braves had not won since 1996! How about some patience?
Even the greatest of breeds don’t win the championship every year. Alex Anthopoulos built Atlanta for long-term competition. Acuña is a huge part of that effort, and it would be best not to fall into his bad side.
