G4 shuts down after only one year of restart

According to a report from Limit, G4 is coming to an end once again. Comcast appears to have pulled the plug on the gaming-focused network, and the outlet has secured a memo sent to employees outlining the reasons for the move. “Viewership is low and the network has not delivered sustainable financial results,” Comcast Chairman and CEO Dave Scott says in the memo. It appears that deactivating and programming the G4 will occur “effective immediately”.

The news is sure to come as a disappointment to fans who were excited to see the network’s return last year, as well as those who had never seen the original G4. The original incarnation of the G4 found a passionate fanbase, and those involved in the network’s return were hoping for even greater success, especially given how powerful the video game industry is now compared to when the G4 first launched.

Over the past decade, industry profits have increased dramatically, and public interest in gaming as an art medium has grown. It’s possible that increased interest in esports and live service games motivated Comcast to bring back the network. It’s unclear whether G4’s failure to find an audience can be attributed to the sheer amount of competition, or the fact that the network didn’t have much time to build a new audience base.

The G4 was first launched in 2002, and ran until 2014. The network’s revival began in November 2021, making it less than a year since Comcast revived the brand. The revived version of G4 looked very promising, bringing in plenty of strong talent, including Qassem “Qasim Gharaibeh”, Austin Creed and Gina Darling. As of this writing, G4’s talent hasn’t impacted advertising on social media, but it looks like we’ll be hearing a lot more about the news in the coming days and weeks. We hope that fans will get more information about the cancellation and the reasons behind the move.
