House of the Dragon’s New Crown is a key piece of the history of the game of thrones

Warning: This article contains major spoilers for the final episode of Game of Thrones… Sunday night brought the penultimate episode of Dragon HouseSeason 1, and with it the confirmation that Aegon II will officially succeed Viserys as King of Westeros. With Rhaenyra moving away from King’s Landing, and Alicent believing her late husband had changed his mind on his deathbed, the Aegon King was crowned. However, the crown given to Aegon II at his coronation isn’t the same we’ve seen Viserys wear throughout his reign. This new crown is not only a master piece of it Game of thrones History, it’s also a bit of a warning about what’s to come.

The crown given to Aegon in the ring is black, very different from the golden headdress worn by Viserys. The crown of Aegon was actually the king of the first Targaryen who ruled the Seven Kingdoms, the king who forged the Iron Throne: Aegon the Conqueror. The choice was made to give Aegon a crown of the same name, who conquered Westeros on the back of a dragon, rather than giving him the crown of his father, who ruled in the era of peace. It is also worth noting that Aegon II did not like his father very much.

Where did the Egon crown come from?

Aegon the Conqueror wore the black crown during his reign. This crown was passed to the next king, Aeneas, who wore it to begin his time on the Iron Throne. He was given a golden crown by High Septon later in his state. His successor, Maegor, hated the Faith of the Seven and chose to use the original crown again. Jaehaerys, who was seen naming Viserys as his successor at the beginning of House of the Dragon, chose to wear the golden crown. He wanted to distinguish himself from Major’s violence and used the crown as a means to represent the changes he would make as king.

The golden crown was often worn by peaceful kings, while the crown of Aegon was worn only by the capricious Major after Aegon’s death.

Why did Aegon II get a different crown?

The crown of the Conqueror represented more dangerous rulers. This foreshadows the future of Aegon II, since his coronation begins a civil war between the House Targaryen.

The crown is also the namesake of Egon, in a way. It is the crown worn by the only other king who shares his name. This is especially interesting when you consider Alicent’s last conversation with Viserys. It was believed that he was talking to Rhaaenyra and he spoke of Aegon’s vision of uniting the kingdom. While he was talking about Aegon in the past, Alicent thought he was talking about their son. It is now fitting that the same crown should be given to both rulers.

The last episode of the first season of Dragon House It airs Sunday, October 23 on HBO and HBO Max.
