In the first episode of House of the Dragon, King Viserys Targaryen announced his plans to break tradition and allow a female successor. He wanted his daughter, Rhaenyra Targaryen, to occupy the Iron Throne after his death. The king’s opinion on the matter did not change, even after he had children from his second wife, Aliscent Hightower. At the end of last week’s episode, King Viserys passed away, and the penultimate version of Season 1 showed on Sunday that no one planned to honor the former governor’s wishes.

Aliscent, Otto, and many in the kingdom spent much time in the hope that Viserys would change his mind about his successor before his death. In their last conversation, Aliscent thought Viserys did just that, even though viewers know it was a misunderstanding. As it turned out, Otto and several other people in the small council were planning to get Aegon on the Iron Throne, no matter what Viserys assigned to him.
Early in Sunday night’s new episode, “The Green Council,” we learn that there is a plan to usurp the throne and the crown of Aegon as the new king. That plan was in place long before Aliscent had a conversation with Viserys. Unfortunately, this plan also includes killing Rhaenyra, Daemon, and all of their family members. Otto believes that the only way for an Aegon to rule a ruling seen as legitimate, is to eliminate any competition. Rhinera is that competition.
Where is Rainera?
Part of the reason Otto and the other members of the Small Council were able to put their plans into action was that Rainera was no longer in King’s Landing.
At the end of last week’s episode, Rhaenyra made it clear that she would be returning to Dragonstone with the rest of her family before jumping on her dragon and returning to King’s Landing. Otto still plans to kill Rhinera, but her death is no longer necessary to begin taking steps toward Aegon’s second coronation.
