The iPad Pro 2022 has been officially revealed along with the new iPad 2022, as both devices have brought a plethora of improvements over their predecessors. But what specific iPad Pro 2022 upgrades versus iPad Pro 2021 upgrades can you expect?
As in years past, Apple sells the new iPad Pro in 11-inch and 12.9-inch flavors, and the larger model remains the only one that ships with a small, illuminated LED display. In addition to better performance thanks to the Apple M2 chip, the new iPad Pro 2022 brings some other changes from the iPad Pro 2021 that distinguish it as the new tablet from Apple.
While we’ll have to wait until we get a chance to review it ourselves to check if the iPad Pro 2022 is as good as Apple claims, it feels like a spot on our best tablets list. can buy. In the meantime, here’s how to make a comparison between the iPad Pro 2022 and the iPad Pro 2021.

iPad Pro 2022 vs iPad Pro 2021: Price
Good news: Apple doesn’t seem to have raised the price of the iPad Pro 2022 compared to last year’s models.
While we expected the company to raise prices by as much as $100 or more, that didn’t materialize. Alternatively, the iPad Pro 2022 11-inch is again priced at $799 Apple website (Opens in a new tab)while the 12.9-inch iPad Pro 2022 starts again at $1,099.
Of course, those are the prices for entry-level models with 128GB of storage, 8GB of RAM, and Wi-Fi only. If you want to trick the iPad Pro 2022 with bells and whistles like 5G connectivity or extra storage, you can pay up to $2,199 for a 12.9-inch iPad Pro 2022 with maximum storage (2TB) and 5G connectivity.
iPad Pro 2022 vs iPad Pro 2021: Design
Apple didn’t change much about the design of the iPad Pros between 2021 and 2022, which is good for us — we absolutely love the thin black bezels and flat, rectangular aluminum chassis of last year’s models.
While we’d have liked to see Apple push the boundaries of the iPad Pro’s design a bit and add features like wireless charging, it’s hard to complain about the company sticking to something good. Additionally, keeping the design consistent year-over-year means that the current accessories for the 2021 iPad Pros will work well with the new models.
However, given how limited the iPad Pro color palette is — you can only get 2021 and 2022 models in silver or space gray — we’d love to see Apple try offering this year’s models in a variety of color schemes.
It’s especially annoying since Apple unveiled a new base iPad 2022 along with the new iPad Pro that now comes in silver, blue, yellow, and pink. We’d love to see Apple bring some of these bold color options to the iPad Pro line of next year’s models. After all, Apple isn’t afraid to add some color to the iPhone 14 Pro models.
iPad Pro 2022 vs iPad Pro 2021: Offer
Unfortunately, Apple seems to have left the iPad Pro 2022 screens unchanged from last year’s models. The 11-inch iPad Pro 2022 comes with an 11-inch Liquid Retina display (2388 x 1668 pixels), while the larger and more expensive 12.9-inch iPad Pro 2022 comes with the same 12.9-inch Liquid Retina XDR (2732 x 2048 pixels) mini LED display .
This is a little disappointing because we were hoping that even if Apple didn’t have a display upgrade – would you dare dream of an OLED? The company will at least start offering the 2022 11-inch iPad Pro with the same tiny HD LED display as its 12.9-inch bigger brother. Unfortunately, this did not work. As for OLED screens, they are not expected to arrive on the iPad Pro until 2024.
iPad Pro 2022 vs. iPad Pro 2021: M2 Performance vs. M1 Performance
The Apple M2 chip It’s the big new update for the iPad Pro 2022, and Apple claims that the 8-core CPU and 10-core GPU are up to 15% and 35% faster, respectively, than the M1-equipped 2021 iPad Pro.
The addition of the M2 means the iPad Pro 2022 is capable of something the iPad was not previously able to: ProRes video capture. Last year’s model was only capable of transcoding ProRes video footage, and thanks to the power of the M2, the iPad Pro 2022 is said to be able to transcode ProRes footage up to 300% faster than the iPad Pro 2021.
iPad Pro 2022 vs iPad Pro 2021: Cameras
The new iPad Pro 2022s has essentially the same set of cameras as last year’s models. The new pros come with two cameras on the back, a 12MP ultra-wide camera (ƒ/1.8 aperture) and a 10MP ultra-wide camera (ƒ/2.4 aperture) with a wider 125-degree field of view.
The iPad Pro’s rear cameras are also capable of capturing 1080p/4K video at up to 60fps, or 4K ProRes video at 30fps (although iPad Pros with 128GB storage can only record ProRes). 1080p resolution) – Again, this is a first for an iPad.
On the front, the iPad Pro 2022 has a 12MP ultra-wide camera (ƒ/2.4 aperture) with a 122-degree field of view. It can capture 1080p video at up to 60 frames per second, again supporting Apple Center Stage Auto Tracking.
iPad Pro 2022 vs iPad Pro 2021: Connectivity
The iPad Pro 2022 looks very similar to last year’s model, but one area where it improves over its predecessor is connectivity.
For starters, the iPad Pro 2022 comes with Wi-Fi 6E ((802.11ax) Bluetooth 5.3 support. This is more advanced than the Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5.1 support we got on last year’s models. Simply put, the new iPad Pro 2022 is more capable On taking advantage of the additional bandwidth offered by Wi-Fi 6E. For more information on what’s different, check out our guide on Wi-Fi 6 vs. Wi-Fi 6E.
The new iPad Pro 2022 also comes with optional 5G connectivity, the first in the iPad Pro line. This is a meaningful upgrade over last year’s models, which only offered optional 4G cellular connectivity.
The ability to connect over 5G means you should expect faster speeds and better coverage from the 5G-enabled iPad Pro versus the 4G-enabled model. Still, there are a lot of complex factors that can affect your speeds over cellular networks. For more details on the difference, check out our guide on 5G vs 4G.
iPad Pro 2022 vs. iPad Pro 2021: Apple Pencil and keyboard
The new iPad Pro 2022 supports the second generation Apple Pencil and the latest Apple Magic Keyboard, just like last year’s iPad Pro 2021. This is great because it means that if you own one of these peripherals, it should work just fine with your new 2022 iPad Pro.
Additionally, there is a new second-generation Apple Pencil feature coming in iPadOS 16 on the iPad Pro 2022 that will detect when the tip of the pen reaches 12mm above the screen and display a preview of what will appear when the pen is touched on the screen. Apple calls this new feature hover — or “hover with Apple Pencil (2nd generation) to be exact” — and it could be a game-changer for people who want to use the Apple Pencil with the iPad Pro.
Hover isn’t just about showing a preview of digital brushes; Apple is taking advantage of the feature to do things like making Scribble’s text fields expand automatically when the Apple Pencil gets close to the screen, and it’s making the feature available to developers so they can use it in their own apps.
However, to be clear, this new swipe feature appears to be Just Available on new iPad Pro 2022 models running iPadOS 16 and working alongside the second generation Apple Pencil. Hopefully Apple will find a way to make this small but nifty feature available on more iPads going forward.
iPad Pro 2022 vs iPad Pro 2021: Battery life
Both the 11 and 12.9-inch models of the new 2022 iPad Pro are rated by Apple to last up to 10 hours on a full battery, the same promise Apple made on last year’s models.
Of course, these iPads ended up a little longer in our internal battery tests, which cost the tablet endless web browsing over Wi-Fi. The 12.9-inch iPad Pro lasted a little more than the promised 10 hours (10:48, to be exact), but the smaller 11-inch iPad Pro 2021 lasted 13 hours and 32 minutes in our tests.
We hope to see the same or better performance from the new 2022 models, but we’ll have to wait and see.
iPad Pro 2022 vs. iPad Pro 2021: Outlook
You see, Apple hasn’t changed much about the new iPad Pro 2022 compared to last year’s models, which are some of the best iPads on the market. This likely explains why the company announced it via a press release rather than a big, luxurious stage show, and it makes the case for upgrading from last year’s model difficult.
However, these look like the iPads you can get if you’re in the market for a new tablet. In fact, if you’re really concerned about connectivity or performance (especially making ProRes video), there are some compelling reasons to choose a new iPad Pro 2022. An upgrade to an M2 chip, Wi-Fi 6E, and optional 5G connectivity should make the tablets a little faster than their predecessors in many ways, and the addition of ProRes video recording could be a boon for video editors looking to spend more time working on the iPad and less on the iPad. A complete computer.
Having said that, we won’t know for sure how they compare until we get some to test ourselves. Stay tuned for our full reviews!
