Netflix confirms it’s exploring cloud gaming options after shutting down Stadia

Netflix is exploring the possibility of a cloud gaming option after closing Google Stadia. Cloud gaming is growing more and more as major tech companies try to figure out how to deliver these massive games to a larger audience. On paper, cloud gaming can make for an affordable hobby. As it stands, you need a $500 console or a PC which can be more expensive and range into the thousands depending on how you buy/build it. Then the games cost $60-$70 and need time to be able to play them. Cloud gaming lets you stream games to your device just as you would stream a movie via Netflix. As of now, the concept is still in its infancy and is improving over time.

In 2021, Netflix chose to enter the gaming space by including mobile games at no additional cost to subscription plans. Although it hasn’t been widely used, Netflix is thinking of bigger things for its gaming efforts. Speaking at TechCrunch DisruptNetflix Vice President of Games Mike Verdu confirmed that the company is “seriously exploring cloud gaming offerings.” As of now, Verdu doesn’t want to overrun the console space, but hopes to use it to bring additional value to Netflix.

“It’s an added value,” Verdo said. “We’re not asking you to sign up as a console replacement.” “It’s a completely different business model. The hope is that over time this will become a very natural way to play games wherever you are.”

Verdu also spoke favorably of the Google Stadia concept, praising its technical features, but believes it has been broken by the business model. As of now, it’s not clear what Netflix’s cloud gaming service might look like or what it will be. It looks like it’s still something the company is discovering so if it does, it could take a while before it materializes.
