Nida Khurshid Talks About Being Part of the Supernatural Spinoff, Latika’s Hunter’s Journey (Exclusive)

CW’s supernatural prefix, winchesterIt may be set in the 1970s and chronicles how John Winchester and Mary Campbell met, fell in love, and became parents to Sam and Dean Winchester, but they’re only part of the story. Join John and Mary as they hunt demons and monsters and work to save the world, Carlos (Jojo Fleets) and the Hunter while training Latica. Played by Nida Khurshid, Latika may still be learning the ropes as a fisherman, but she has a lot of intellectual knowledge that makes her a formidable force in her own right – which comes in handy in this week’s “Teach Your Kids Well” when it comes to dealing with an entity that may not be exactly what It appears for the first time.

ComicBook.com Sat down with Khurshid to talk about being a part of supernatural prequel In addition to her character’s journey as well as Latika’s part of the composition of this “hunting sauce” is the team.

nicole drum, ComicBook.com: I know my fans supernatural They have all been really excited about the series since it was announced, and the premiere was a huge success. Were you a fan of the original version? supernatural If so, how did it feel to be a part of this new chapter of that epic story?

Khorshid’s call: Oh my gosh, it has been my biggest blessing to be a part of this story. I grew up loving everything magical, supernatural, witches, vampires, monsters, hunters, all of this was just right in my alley and was a great escape from reality when you grow up feeling completely different and then watch something like Supernatural, which allows you to go to a different world For a second you feel like you belong in this world. So, being on this show was just a beautiful moment full circle for me. I haven’t watched every episode like my beautiful co-star Drake Rodger, but I’ve seen a lot of them and it’s still very surreal and I’m so grateful.

.

And being a fan of all things like magic, witchcraft, vampires and all that, the show, as in supernatural Also, kind of digging into a lot of the seemingly cool stuff out there, but a lot of it based on beliefs, legends, and oral traditions. Did you have to do a lot of research for this, or did you learn something new or interesting that might not have been in your wheelhouse before?

I think that was one of the really exciting things about joining this project is that I, I mean, loved doing research myself and Latica loved doing research and I think we’re very similar in many ways. So, getting to know her was, like, OK, let me do my own research on the traditions and myths and monsters and also for Latika being of Indian Pakistani origin and what some myths and monsters are in my culture. And I did a little research on that and I shared this research with Ruby, our amazing showrunner. It was amazing to realize that so much of what we see on TV and in movies as far as the supernatural world goes, it’s really rooted in history about what many people think is true and a lot of myths. And it’s not just new stuff, it’s been around for centuries. And I think this is so wonderful that this is only rooted in who we are as human beings.

It makes it a much more enriching experience. And you mentioned your personality, how it is and how you sort of deal with that. One of the things that I really appreciate as seeing into your character is that she’s kind of a bookworm, and she delves into all the wit that book because I feel like that’s an aspect of monster hunting and supernatural things that we enjoy. You can’t always watch the show in a series that delves into things like this. It’s just kind of missing the side of it. This week’s episode in particular, we see that the book’s wit is really the most important part of the whole monster-hunting attitude. But we also see that Marie doesn’t really want to listen because she has her own ideas about how this should be in her tunnel vision. How does your character see their place on the team, given that they are very knowledgeable about things?

I think Latika is still finding her footing at the moment, not only as a Hunter in training, but also as a human and who she is in the community. I think there is a lot of respect that Marie and Latika have for each other. I think Latika put the Campbell family on a pedestal for good reason, and she really honors everything they teach and tell her about. She realizes that Marie has just come from the place of love now and wants to protect Latika. But at the end of the day, knowledge is power, and Latika has a lot of knowledge. And I think in the next few episodes, especially towards the end of the two episodes, we see that Mary starts to realize that this is a beautiful dynamic team that the four of them have. And each of them really brings its own unique ingredient to making this hunting sauce. Do you know what I mean? And you can’t have a sauce without every ingredient.

How are the seventies and now similar?

What I also enjoy about this series, it’s set in the 70’s. I love, those clothes are great. And their music was great, and this show has great music and great costumes. And I have to say despite everyone in this series, I love your character’s wardrobe the most. What is your favorite thing about telling this story in this time period? But are there also any challenges you’ve had with this object, I sort of think?

My favorite part about filming in the ’70s is that I think it’s very similar to where we are now as a society. In the seventies, there was a lot of fuss and change, desire for it, women were talking a lot, and everything was kind of changing.

And I think this is an interesting place to tell a story, especially about monsters. I use the analogy of a monster and I mean even we are human as monsters sometimes. And I think all over the world, there’s a lot of interesting things going on in the ’70s. And when Latika was growing up, even where she is, she moved from Pakistan in India to England to Lawrence, Kansas. I think she is used to a lot of change that is happening around her. But at the same time, she is still an emigrant, constantly finding her footing, training a small fisherman, constantly finding her footing. And this was a really cool challenge to face and see how she would handle herself. And that’s another thing that I really love about our show is that it’s not just monsters, but it also delves into the humanity of these characters and who they are and what their dynamics are and how we’re all more alike than we are different.

What’s next for Latika

And Jensen Ackles is clearly a big part of this show, and I don’t just mean because it’s obvious that supernatural Of all that and being the narrator, he’s also one of the eps. It’s a big part of why this happens. We have to tell these stories. Are you even going to work with him? And is there any advice he gave you about being a part of this universe, which is clearly so beloved by fans?

We’ve worked with Jensen the pilot and he’s been there pretty much every day, day in and day out. It felt so beautiful having him right there in his place because any time we had a question, a comment, or a concern, any time we were nervous, we could just look at Jensen, and he would provide such beautiful insight and be such a calming force. But at the same time, we were like, ‘Oh my God, we have to do this really well, because Jensen is standing there. So it was great. Great for nerve wrecking and calming all together at the same time. No, but it’s very cool and I at any time, have a question or advice to ask, is really there for us. And I think I can speak for the four of us when I say this, and we’re really grateful that he’s handling this.

Is there anything fans can expect to prepare themselves for your character’s journey this season?

Something they can expect is that Latika has a lot more to it. It’s more than what she wears now. And I think we’re all as human beings, and I think the choices we make are to either project the good and the bad and be shy and trust, whatever it is. It all boils down to our choices. And I think Latika is very specific about her choices at the moment, but I’m excited for everyone to see more choices that Latika makes.

winchester It airs Tuesdays at 8/7c on The CW.
