Newport Film announces second cinematography lab for the month of October

NewportFilm has announced the revival of the Cinematography Lab, which seeks to provide creative support and mentorship to emerging documentary cinematographers. Six fellows will participate in this year’s program, which is scheduled for October 21-23 at the Norman Bird Sanctuary in Middletown, RI.

Rob Moss, Chair of Visual and Environmental Studies at Harvard University, John Byrnes, who served as director of photography for Social Dilemma and Game Changers, and Nicole Hirsch Whitaker, director of photography for Cobain: A Montage of Heck and Girl Rising as lab mentors. Fellows accepted for this year include Justin Deegan, Daniel Goetz, Matthew O’Henderson, Serena Hodges, Loretta Prevost and Jane Macedo Yang.

“I look forward to welcoming this year’s group of amazingly talented cinematographers and connecting them to this extraordinary trio of photorealistic filmmakers, each of whom are creative leaders in the industry,” said Andrea Van Buren, Artistic Director of Newport Film. “We are ambitious in our vision to deliver an experience that will have a lasting impact on the lives and careers of the 2022 group.”

The lab was originally designed in consultation with Sean Flynn, co-founder and program director at Points North Institute. At the weekend resort in a focused and intimate environment, master classes and workshops aim to inform and educate the group of fellows. There will also be a space to share their work with their peers, reflect on their process and communicate about the aesthetic and professional issues facing current directors of photography.

“In the first cinematography lab, I had the pleasure of meeting fellow filmmakers at various points in our careers, in an environment where we can think out loud about our work,” Moss said of working on the inaugural program in 2019. He has a rich promise to revive our shared love of filmmaking, and to imagine our collective lives as directors now, and in the future.”
