Todd MacFarlane shares Jim Lee’s cover of Batman/Spawn Cross

Todd McFarlane’s campaign to make the new Batman/Spawn comic crossover the best-selling book of the decade is going well. Having already revealed a variant cover earlier today that he actually drew himself, but he also showed off the variant cover by anyone other than Image Comics co-founder and former Marvel group Jim Lee. IGN It has the full details of the assorted cover, which features Scott Williams inks and colors by Alex Sinclair, as well as some talk from the man himself about reuniting with Todd for a different version of the DC and Image Comics event. Batman / Spawn #1 It will hit comic stores in January of next year.

“It was 100% challenging because the two characters share a lot of visual similarities and are both driven by a basic need to do justice, so the task was — how do I compare and contrast on one cover between these characters?” The outlet told me about drawing the two comic book heroes together. “So with Spawn, I went with a slimmer, athletic build where the head was a living extension of these forces. With Batman, I chose an old-school boxer build that was square and thick. Curved up with curled muscles, this Batman reacts lightning fast to any threat, and his robe is an element of camouflage. A way for Batman to immerse himself in the deepest shadows.

“I think we’ve got a whole new generation and that’s going to be Woodstock,” MacFarlane told ComicBook.com at New York Comic Con earlier this month about any comparison between the ’90s crossover and the new generation. “So it’s like we did, that party was a long time ago. This will be their concert. I don’t think there will be a comparison. It will just be ‘Was that cool at the time?'” yes. Is that cool today? Then that’s it. We have solved our problem.”

Greg Capolo, who previously drew the majority of Spawn comics for years and then made his mark on Batman in a big way, will provide the pencils for the series. When the theme of villains came up in the new series, the artist told us, “Todd asked me who I wanted to use, so I said I thought you should use the Court of Owls, which he wasn’t familiar with. So he went and grabbed some books and read from underneath and then said, ‘Wow, that’s Perfect fit for the story I’d like to write.” So my idea was to use the Court. The Court was very popular. I think it’s one of the best things that Snyder and I did together when we took on Batman and the fans. Really, really, really like Court of Owls and Talon and other things. So I just go To me. That’s not thinking.”
