It looks like fans were going to learn more about T’Challa after Wakanda opened to the world. Delving more into the man was an excellent way to connect viewers with the King of Wakanda even more. It was nice to see how Coogler put the microscope on the character during his full MCU dive.
Coogler has called on co-writer Ryan Cole, who remastered the sequel, to “honor the truth” that the cast and crew felt about the death of the Oscar-nominated actor. The director stated that the redacted script honors Bosman’s memory while moving “the story forward”. After the story was completed, Coogler and the company began filming the second part. But the circumstances were different compared to the first movie as the COVID-19 protocols and Boseman’s death resulted in the cast and crew spending less time together. In the face of much adversity, the film turned into a therapy session for the returning cast and director. In his words:
Art can be therapeutic, but the healing process can be painful and sometimes tortuous. But also sometimes soothing and beneficial. It was all of those things. Sharing that with the actors, who were also in grief, gave me so much grace.
Granting himself and the cast’s favor allowed everyone to deal with the late MCU star’s absence from the set. The environment became a safe place where the cast and crew could pour their grief into creating a great lineup of work. While some Marvel fans were pushing for T’Challa to be recast, it was too early for those who worked with and knew Chadwick Boseman personally. Of course, the cast agreed with Marvel’s decision not to recast with co-star Winston Duke expressing happiness with the decision. Lupita Nyong’o has expressed her inability to see another actor by the name of King of Wakanda despite online petitions pushing for it. So, the cast wasn’t on board for anyone to replace Boseman.
