The Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro are a lot better than their predecessors. While there are still some issues, like lackluster battery life, the latest Pixels have improved one major aspect on the Pixel 6: the fingerprint sensor. It has gone from painfully slow (and imprecise) last year to much faster this time.
But according to a new leak from Kuba Wojciechowski Twitter (Opens in a new tab)Google may try an ultrasonic fingerprint sensor on the Pixel 8 (Pro). Searching the Pixel 7 Pro’s source code, Kuba discovered references to the Pixel G10, possibly also referred to as “gepard” (a German word meaning leopard).
I recently found some information about the rumored Google Pixel G10 – a modified Pixel 7 Pro with a Qualcomm Ultrasonic fingerprint scanner! Read more below: https://t.co/P4TK28fwSUOctober 25 2022
One thing to note is that Cheetah was the codename for the Pixel 7 Pro, so the G10 could actually be the Pixel 7 Pro’s test bench, similar to how the Pixel 5 came with Google’s tried-and-true Tensor. So, the Pixel G10, a modified prototype of the Pixel 7 Pro, will likely never see the light of day. (the position that 91 mobiles (Opens in a new tab)who broke the latest news about the G10, agrees.)
Far though, what’s the point here? Kuba seems to have found a reference to an ultrasonic fingerprint sensor in the code. The G10 is a Pixel 7 Pro all the way, including a QHD+ display, which is why we think this is a bridge between the Pixel 7 Pro and the Pixel 8 Pro.
Google seems to have a lot of Pixels in development, including the mysterious Lynx and Felix models it spotted 9to5Google (Opens in a new tab) Several months ago. The site thinks it’s the Pixel 7a, which would make a lot of sense. The other might be — and you take this with a big grain of salt — the long-rumored Pixel Fold.
The Pixel G10 was spotted at the time as well, and some believe it’s called the Pixel 7 Ultra. We’re skeptical, as the leaked information about the G10 so far is the Pixel 7 Pro in all but a name and fingerprint scanner.
We’d love to see a faster fingerprint sensor on the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro. Google has made serious strides in the past couple of years with its smartphones, so we want to see this trend continue. The Pixel 7 Pro, for example, is pretty close to topping our list of best Android phones, and Google could take the public crown if it sorts out some of the remaining issues with Pixel hardware.
