The Cardinals look ready for another veteran farewell season

The St. Louis Cardinals had a tough farewell season in 2022, and they may be preparing for another in 2023.

St. Louis Cardinals bid farewell to beloved veterans Albert Pujols and Yadir Molina at the end of the 2022 season. It was difficult for many to accept the ends of such distinguished careers, and according to the RJ Anderson and Dane Berry of CBS Sports2023 will bring another farewell to veteran Adam Wainwright.

Wainwright made his MLB debut with the Cardinals in 2005 and has been with them every season since. He announced that 2023 would be his last season, and he would return to St. Louis for it.

He told reporters, “I think I was supposed to come back for another year. Long story short: Yes, this will be the last. Just everybody relax, don’t freak out about it.”

Cardinals fans don’t seem to be getting a break. Watching Pujols alone was already bittersweet enough for all MLB fans, and then watching Molina leave also made the wound a little bit more.

Facing another season of heartbreak will surely be tough, but after Wainwright’s career is over, he will undoubtedly be remembered for his accomplishments.

Veteran Cardinals Adam Wainwright has achieved a lot during his long career

Wainwright has helped the team in the lineup on several occasions, something not many shooters do. He did well in 2017 and earned his only Silver Slugger, along with two Golden Gloves during his career.

In the 2017 season, he averaged .262/.279/.452 in an OPS of .731. Throughout his career on the hill, he has produced an ERA of 3.38, an average hitter of 0.250 and a WHIP of 1.22. He also played in three All-Star games (2010, 2013 and 2014). He was part of the World Championship winning team in 2006, and his display has surely helped the team for nearly two decades.

It’s no surprise that he retired, as his career has lasted for 17 seasons so far. However, saying goodbye is never easy, especially when there are so many likeable players coming in at the same time.
