Donald Sutherland Joins Upcoming Survival Thriller ‘Heart of the Earth’

Donald Sutherland has co-produced the upcoming thriller Heart Land, a rare UK-New Zealand co-production.

Directed by David Carson (Star Trek: Generations, “Unstoppable”), the film is currently being filmed in New Zealand and Quebec, Canada, and post-production is scheduled for the UK.

Bend by Matthew A. Collins (“All Those Glitters”), “Heartland” has been named as “28 Days Later” corresponding to “Lord of the Flies”. The story revolves around two disparate groups of children struggling to survive in the brutal landscape of infested America, where adults are infected with a mysterious plague and only children are immune. Left to their own devices, young survivors must rely on primal instinct and dwindling resources to fend off a raging infection.

The picture centers around a character named Jonah, who is the grandson of Rick (Sutherland).

“Rick is the emotional heart and anchor of Heartland,” Carson says. “And I can’t imagine anyone other than Donald Sutherland playing with him. I’ve been impressed and impressed by Donald’s wonderful performance for a long time and I know he will bring depth and charisma to the role and the movie. I am so excited to be working with Donald in a role that requires such an exceptionally detailed, imaginative and profound performance.”

Sutherland recently starred in the Netflix thriller “Mr. Harrigan’s Phone”, adapted from Stephen King’s novel, and Roland Emmerich’s independent science fiction show “Moonfall”.

Trademark Films’ Academy Award-winning producer David Parfitt (“Father”), in association with Carson Center Mass Studios, will serve as UK producers with New Zealand producer Michael Turner and Morebork Movies.

Additional producers include Byron A. Martin and Todd Berger. Academy Award winner Richard Taylor will be the designer of the creatures with his Weta Workshop banner.

Heartland was an official selection for the 2021 Frontiers Co-Production Market Forum as well as one of the featured projects in the 2021 TIFF.
