Kenny Beckett’s awful start to the Pittsburgh Steelers should be cause for great concern.
It’s a small sample size, but Pittsburgh Steelers fans won’t love what that means for the novice starting quarterback Kenny Beckett.
Pittsburgh enters farewell week with a disastrous 2-6 record. They tied with Jacksonville Jaguars for 14th place in the AFC. Only the Houston Texans are worse at 1-5-1.
Simply put, it would take a recent prodigy for Steelers coach Mike Tomlin to avoid his first losing season at the helm. Even more alarming, Beckett is showing signs that he’s not the man…
Beckett’s drop to interception ratio (2:8) is the worst of any previous first-round player in his first five NFL games dating back to 2010.
Of course there is more than meets the eye. This is why this is so worrying for him.

Pickett was the first and only player selected in the first round of the 2022 NFL Draft. He fell in his new hometown of the Steelers at #20. No other caller came off the board until the third round. While Malik Willis is the only other rookie to see meaningful shots, the Tennessee Titans put him in a position where he could make his first start.
There is clearly a lot to unpack here. Beckett sounds like a lovable guy, a player you want to pull off. Unfortunately, it may not be in the Oole Fake Slide King cards. Although he had an incredible amount of starts in Pete, it wasn’t until his big season that he set fire to him. His last great college season raised his mid-level potential all the way up to his first low-profile.
Gloves nonsense aside, there are four other things Steelers fans should be concerned about.
Beckett’s best trait was his ability to start and play right away. He played his college ball on the same court as the Steelers. Matt Canada was a big part of his enlistment To the heart of the temple to the house. We also cannot overlook the fact that Beckett has to replace a legend….
And it’s not as if the Steelers are devoid of talent. Nagy Harris won the Doak Walker Award in Alabama at the Crimson Tide backyard. Pat Freymouth had a farm in Pennsylvania. Chase Claypool could play a receiver and George Pickens had a lot of untapped potential coming from Georgia. While the offensive line is in varying degrees terrible, there are teams that have much worse weapons.
In short, Beckett was only going to be as good in the NFL as his status would allow him. Many thought the Steelers’ culture would lift him up and help make up for some of his shortcomings. Sadly, many of them have been exposed since Mitchell Trubesky took over. While it’s understandable why Tomlin made the move when he did, he chose between two poor alternatives.
Plenty of quarterbacks have bad rookie years, but Beckett is looking to break down more than thrive at the moment.
