The Minnesota Vikings and Detroit Lions pulled another amazing trade, as former Iowa star TJ Hockenson goes to the Twin Cities on the NFL trade deadline.
Not since Jimmy Johnson was managing the Cowboys have we seen this many deals between two competing teams. During the 2022 NFL Draft, the Lions and Vikings traded famous first-round picks. Detroit moved up to 12th to graduate Jameson Williams of Alabama via Ohio State. Minnesota State ended up picking Georgia cornerback Louis Ceni with the last pick of the first round.
While the Lions aren’t going anywhere fast, expectations are that the Vikings’ tight end will be sidelined by Irv Smith Jr. for more than two months with a sprained ankle that necessitated the move to go to take Hockinson out of Detroit.

What this movement meant for the Vikings is clear. They don’t think Smith will be a huge factor for them for the rest of the season. He could return in the final weeks of the year, as well as the NFC playoffs, a place where the Vikings will be a leading player in preventing disaster. This is the real reason why they do this trade. Minnesota knows they can win NFC pretty low this season.
As for black, this movement means something else entirely. Perhaps this is a strong indication that Campbell has lost popularity in Detroit. He had built a cult-like following in Motown, but Motor City’s Dan Campbell might not survive two seasons at the helm. Although NFC has been pretty awful this year, the Lions have the worst record in the conference, despite having talent.
