Twitter chief Elon Musk reveals the penalty for impersonating verified users

Elon Musk has revealed what would happen if you impersonated a verified Twitter user using the new check mark system. Earlier this year, Elon Musk bought Twitter for more than $40 billion. The deal caused a lot of scrutiny as many people thought that it was not good for the app and would do more harm than good. However, he still has a lot of supporters who believe he can do a lot by fixing Twitter. He became the owner of the application at the end of October and began to make major changes. He has already laid off half of the company and started rolling out an update that will soon allow all users to purchase a blue checkmark for their profile. Previously, the check mark indicated that the account belonged to an important person (famous person, journalist or politician) and that their tweets were not from a fraud.

Now, due to the way people can change display names, photos, and other things on Twitter, it has led to a lot of questions about what this new checkmark system will look like. What happens if the average person decides to buy a checkmark, change their profile to someone like Joe Biden, and cause a mess? Well, they just got banned and are allowed to create another account and pay another $8 for their Twitter Blue subscription, giving them a check mark. Elon Musk says If scammers want to do it a million times, they absolutely can. Some users have suggested ways to make this less of an issue, like making changes to the app font so people can’t use similar characters like lowercase L in place of uppercase I to make their name look similar to someone else’s username. Musk agreed to the ideawhich means they can look into this matter.

As of now, it remains to be seen how the scammer’s situation will spiral out of control. If everyone understands that the check mark is basically meaningless now and doesn’t actually represent someone’s identity, people might quickly learn to take a closer look at profiles and not be fooled. However, we simply won’t know until later.
