The eye-catching Hyundai IONIQ 6 is a long-awaited follow-up to the widely acclaimed Hyundai IONIQ 5 as one of the best current range of electric vehicles available in North America. Although the so-called “electric current” won’t reach US shores until 2023, reports from those who have seen and driven the all-electric sedan on Korean soil suggest it’s a very interesting piece of equipment.
You get a very distinctive design, based on Hyundai’s all-electric E-GMP platform, which is all about improving aerodynamic efficiency. That also means there’s 381 miles of range for the all-wheel drive model, and a 77.4 kWh battery. A smaller 53 kWh battery model can still give drivers about 266 miles of range. With a wheelbase of 2,950mm, there’s a large, spacious interior that offers plenty of comfort and a range of trim options.
The newer Hyundai Stable also stands out for its use of technology, including more than 700 border pixels, which have been used extensively to make headlights and taillights stand out from the crowd. Since it’s from Hyundai, owners will also be able to indulge in a plethora of additional tech features as well, ranging from a suite of driving aids to over-the-air software updates. Digital door mirrors with additional interior displays will be available in some markets as well.
Hyundai IONIQ 6: Release Window and Price
While the Hyundai IONIQ 6 will be available in the Korean domestic market soon, it should start appearing in some European markets this year. North America won’t get mains until 2023. Plus, prices haven’t been confirmed yet.
Hyundai Ioniq 6: design and interior
Hyundai designers have worked long and hard on the exterior of the IONIQ 6 with the express intention of getting the drag coefficient as low as possible. They did a cracking job as well, hitting a figure of 0.21, which clearly helps improve the car’s overall range and efficiency. A lot of this has to do with the many areas of the car that have been modified and tuned to improve the way the IONIQ 6 moves on the road.
There is an active air fender in the lower front fender along with precision wheel gap reducers on the front edges of the front fenders. The latter compensates for the relatively short distance between the front of the car and the front wheels of the IONIQ 6. Likewise, the wheel air curtains and the very distinctive integrated rear spoiler help the car pass through the air as efficiently as possible.
In terms of size, the Hyunadai IONIQ 6 measures 191.1 inches in length, 74 inches in width and 58.8 inches in height, which means that it has a very distinctive and very low profile. Looking at it is definitely different, especially when looking at it from behind, thanks to that spoiler and taillights.
Meanwhile, Hyundai’s designers didn’t skimp on the interior, taking advantage of the extra roominess offered by the 116-inch wheelbase. The interior thinking is to provide a home away from home, with a range of interior decoration options all designed to soothe the senses. The ergonomic chaise longue is available as an option, which is slightly thinner than usual and offers a range of electric adjustment options.
Primary power points are also available inside the vehicle, with one Type-A port and four USB Type-C ports, all conveniently integrated into the interior. There is a standard touchscreen arrangement in the car, with a 12-inch infotainment system and a 12-inch digital cluster in front of the steering wheel.
Bi-color ambient lighting comes on while riding, too. It offers owners and passengers an opportunity to configure the scene based on the choice of color and mood at the time. The theme’s choice of 64 colors and six preset colors is complemented when you’re on the go, too, thanks to the Speed Sync lighting mode.
This actually changes the brightness of the lighting in the front seat area depending on how fast you are going. Hyundai also offers the EV Performance Tune-Up system, which allows drivers to customize the vehicle’s setup depending on how and where they want to drive.
Hyundai Ionic 6 will be available in 12 exterior colors, which include Gravity Gold Matte, Abyss Black Pearl, Serenity White Pearl, Curated Silver Metallic, Nocturne Gray Metallic, Nocturne Gray Matte, Transmission Blue Pearl, Biophilic Blue Pearl, Ultimate Red Metallic, Digital Green Pearl, Digital Green Matte as well as Byte Blue. Interior trim options are available in a choice of four colors, including dark gray with light gray, dark olive green with light gray, and black with pale brown and black.
Hyundai IONIQ 6: Battery and Range
Concerns about range may become a thing of the past with the arrival of the Hyundai IONIQ 6. Thanks to its 77.4 kWh battery and the car’s ultra-dynamic exterior design, the IONIQ 6’s WLTP numbers currently stand at 614 km, which equates to approximately 381 miles. The EPA numbers, experience tells us, will be lower – although how much is unclear.
However, the IONIQ 6 will be available in two different versions, with options available to suit a range of driver requirements, and although the numbers listed below are in kilometers compared to miles, the stats look great.
The 77.4 kWh long-range model has the aforementioned WLTP range of 614 km (about 381 miles) in the two-wheel drive version with 18-inch wheels. The two-wheel drive vehicle with 20-inch rims provides 545 km (about 338 miles). The first has an energy efficiency of 14.3 kW / 100 km.
Meanwhile, the Hyundai IONIQ 6 all-wheel drive with 18-inch tires has a range of 583 km (about 362 miles) with an energy efficiency of 15.5 kW/100 km. The all-wheel drive model, with 20-inch rims, offers 519 km (about 322 miles) of range and an energy efficiency of 16.9 kWh/100 kW.
Finally, the standard version of the Hyundai IONIQ 6 with a 53-kWh battery and 18-inch tires offers up to 429 km (about 266 miles) of range and an energy efficiency of 13.9 kWh/100 km.
Hyundai IONIQ 6: Performance
The Hyundai IONIQ 6 will be available with a 77.4 kWh battery paired with a twin electric motor in either a two-wheel, rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive configuration. The all-wheel drive vehicle will have 239 kW of power and deliver 446 pound-feet of torque. This helps the Hyundai IONIQ 6 go from 0 to 60 mph in just 5.1 seconds.
With the Hyundai IONIQ 6 design built on the automaker’s innovative E-GMP architecture, there’s impressive charging capabilities on offer too, just as in the IONIQ 5. The platform supports both 400- and 800-Volt charging, with 800-V charging as standard. ; Charging can be done at 400V without the need for any additional components or adapters. This means convenience and speed in charging, with a high-spec 350 kW charger capable of replenishing a car battery from 10% to 80% in just 18 minutes.
Hyundai IONIQ 6: Driver Assistance Features
Expect the Hyundai IONIQ 6 to come packed with plenty of driver assistance options, all of which fall under the Hyundai SmartSense and Advanced Driver Assistance umbrella.
Owners will be able to take advantage of the Highway 2 Driving Assist feature, which includes automatically changing lanes where permitted. There’s intelligent cruise control, forward collision avoidance, and evasive steering assistance, too. Other semi-autonomous things on offer include Intelligent Speed Limit Assist and High Beam Assist, while attention assistance can be achieved at long distances thanks to the Driver Attention Warning system.
Hyundai Ioniq 6: a look ahead
The Hyundai IONIQ 6 looks noticeably different from the IONIQ 5, and at a time many people are turning in the SUV trend, the sedan’s design is a bold move. In essence, the car is very similar to the IONIQ 5 in that it uses the innovative E-GMP platform and cargo chassis. The difference is the amazing, smooth and aerodynamic body shape.
This is also a great car inside, with plenty of space, plenty of comfort and interior finishes that include – depending on the trim option – eco-leather, seats using recycled PET fabric and dashboards made of TPO bio-leather. Even the carpets were produced using recycled fishing nets.
Combine design and innovation here with the impressive range available from any battery pack and Hyundai has a potential winner.
